South Korean justice has convicted an actor of The Squid Game of sexual harassment

The artist, who in 2022 became the first South Korean to win a Golden Globe as best supporting actor in a series for his portrayal of an old man in the famous dystopian series, he was indicted in November 2022 for having hugged and kissed a woman on the cheek between August and September 2017 during a theater tour, for which the Prosecutor’s Office requested one year’s imprisonment.

The interpreter, who has denied the accusations from the beginning, said as he left the court that he will appeal against the sentence handed down this Friday.

O Yeong-su’s great career

O Yeong-su was born in 1944 and his life was not easy at the beginning, since at a very young age he lost his father, murdered, and his brother, kidnapped by Northern forces during the Korean War.

He began his career as an actor in the 1970s, mainly in the theater, where he worked in more than 200 productions. He later began acting in film and television, often playing monks due to his experience with Buddhist works.

Furthermore be part of hundreds of works of classical Korean theater, he also acted in works by Western playwrights. O Yeoung-su is also a writer and was a soldier in his youth.

Thanks to this career, he later joined the Korean National Theater Company before starting to be called for specific roles in films and series.

In late 2021 he became internationally known by playing Oh Il-nam, the oldest contestant on The Squid Gamea series that imagines a macabre world where outcasts compete in traditional children’s games that turn deadly, and which has become Netflix’s most popular series, attracting 111 million followers in less than four weeks after its premiere in 2021.
