There is something that differentiates Q Avenue from the rest of the musicals. This is nothing new, because Avenida Q premiered in Buenos Aires in 2010. Each of its characters is looking for a purpose in life. Nothing different from the majority, the fact is that they are… puppets. And they sing and dance.
Not everyone is a puppet, because there are actors who act as interpreters with their bodies, and others with the puppets in tow – as also happens in The magic box from Disney-.
Q Avenue It’s a sex comedy, which if it leads to laughter is because the scenes involving sex are filmed by puppets. If we saw – and heard – two actors say what we heard, we would almost find ourselves in front of a sketch Gatebreaker or from the times of Olmedo and Porcel.
And he revolutionized the Broadway theater scene with all his irreverence and scandalous songs – in 2003 – about sex and racism, and even won the Tony for best musical, when he was in competition… Evil.
Princeton has just graduated and is looking for a job and a place to live. And Avenida Q is the only neighborhood where you can find the latter, at a low price. He quickly becomes friends with her neighbors. There are Kate Monster, a nursery assistant who wants to grow up, Rod, a businessman who has never come out, Nicky, who shares a room with Rod; Brian, a comedian, Kimchi, the Korean therapist who has no clients for now and is Brian’s partner; Trekkie Monster, addicted to Internet pornography; Lucy, pulpy cabaret singer.
And there is a Mambrú on stage
And there is also the building manager, Manu, who was a successful singer in his youth, and as played by Manu Ntaka, former Mambruthe jokes about the band are more than recurring.
Melania Lenoir, who had already been director and had played Lucy and Kate Monster 14 years ago at the Teatro La Plaza, is responsible for the staging. And whoever Fiona was on this same stage as Maipo manages to keep the work acidic, sarcastic, but she doesn’t stay with the joke itself, but rather her gag is well inserted into what is being told. In the script, bah, which is the basis of this musical where everyone is going through an existential crisis.
The music is performed live, with the musicians sitting downstage, so you can’t see them, but it’s nice that you can hear them.
As for the artists, within a level that they know how to raise high, Nacho Pérez Cortés (Princeton and Rod), Lali Vidal (Kate and Lucy) and Andy Chico in the role of Kimchi, manage to elicit the loudest applause. There are 6 shows left in this short season, on Tuesday evenings.
