Possessor of a diminutive that does not belittle her, Laurita Fernandez deals with Clarion in those moments of life that he has already experienced before: his adrenaline is at its peak, but he is happy. With her charisma and huge reputation as a musical superstar, she debuts Legally blondea theatrical success on Broadway, London and around the world (with a film version also an anthology), which was presented for the first time in Buenos Aires.
Laurita is 33 years old and she stopped being Laura a long time ago.
“I don’t see ‘Laurita’ as a diminutive, It has nothing to do with age or being thrown away. Instead, it suddenly became more of an affectionate nickname. People identify me that way and as the years went by I started to like them,” she begins.
“It is also true that my name is very common: Laura Fernández. There are millions of Laura and Fernández (Laughter). I remember when I started on TV and Marcelo Tinelli told me: ‘Laurita Fernández’, because I was the youngest. He “The first year I didn’t like that nickname at all and now I love it”, says the actress, dancer and presenter who goes on stage at the emblematic High School Theater to play Elle Woods, a hyper-fashionable girl who went out with her heir of a family with an important surname, who leaves her because he wants to enter politics and needs a “less blonde” girlfriend.
From there, the character played by Laurita enrolls in the prestigious Harvard Law School and proves that, despite her superficial appearance, she can overcome prejudices and stand out in other areas too.
The most demanding of his entire career
“It’s a huge challenge. I think it’s the most challenging thing I’ve done so far. Because I’m always on stage, I have about fifteen costume changes, 15-second changes. Once the show starts, I can’t even drink water until it’s over.“, describes his role in the work.
He continues: “It’s challenging because it has very difficult songs, a lot of choreography and because the protagonist goes through very different states. If you see it from afar, it’s her.”a blonde who likes fashion, a stereotype that might shock a little. However, this character immediately achieves the audience’s empathy. Everyone loves her and wants things to go well for her. It seems really incredible to me that, despite all the superficial world that she lives in, she generates empathy in people who watch,” she says.
And he continues: “Building this character was a real challenge… I managed it by trying a lot, taking references from many places, but above all crossing it… The less I thought about it, things were falling into place, it was really crazy”, he says.
Legally blonde has in the cast with It costs, Mario Pasik, Federico Salles AND Santiago Ramundo; as well as an extraordinary group of dancers, singers and actors composed of: Ivana Rossi, Georgina Tirotta, Lucien Gilabert, Camila Rosenfeld, Carolina Mainero, Fernanda Provenzano, Martina Scigliano, Nicolás Villalba, Tatiana Luna and Nahuel Adhami. The direction and setting are Ariel of the Master AND Marcelo Caballero; and production by Carlos Rottemberg.
The Argentine flavour
Laurita Fernández had the opportunity to meet Laura Bell Bundy, who played Elle Woods, the title character, on Broadway. She texted him and he replied, they set up a meeting and what she told him wasn’t very encouraging.
“When I met Laura she confessed to me that it was the hardest thing she had ever done in her life… And now I know why she told me! (Laughs). She’s a very demanding female character, which is great because she has a lot of spice, because she goes through a lot of places during the show: she has humor, anger, shame, a beautiful arc of feelings,” says who was also inspired by watching the film version, a feature film from 2001, starring Reese spoon.
“My character expresses himself differently than the one in the film, because we Argentinians have another malice, other ways of humour. And the film is also from 2001: our way of speaking has changed a bit, but the story on which this show is based is very current. It’s about prejudice, changing to fit in and belonging, or wanting to conform to others.“adds the one who has just starred in another hit with his composition of Señorita Miel in Matilda.
-The work raises the question of prejudice: have you been discriminated against a lot because you are blonde? Or other things you felt discriminated against or stigmatized for?
-I felt frustrated because, For every professional achievement he achieved, there was always a rumor or news story that he had achieved that dream thanks to some love story..
For example, when I won the Dance It was because he was supposedly having an affair with Tinelli (Marcelo). When I did SugarThey said he was having an affair with Gustavus (Yankelevich). Gossip of this type was frustrating, it all seemed very sexist to me and distracted from personal commitment, from the results that were based on work. If someone wants to get a job like that, I’m not the one to judge them, but it’s never been like that with me. He broke my balls, it was very frustrating…
-But you got over it…
-I understand that this type of prejudice can demotivate many people, but because of my way of being, on the contrary, these things make me stronger, more of a warrior.
-In cases where you feel that they do not approve of you or criticize you, do you want to demonstrate that you are not like that? Have you sometimes found yourself seeking approval or wanting to point out that you are more than just a pretty blonde?
-There were times when yes, and it was directly related to personal insecurity. I I had insecurities, like everyone, and I worked a lot on them. In addition to a constant dissatisfaction for not having achieved the desired perfection, due to personal needs. This led me to places of frustration, I felt I would never be able to achieve what I believed others expected of me.
Love, marriage and motherhood
Laurita Fernández’s love affairs are also brilliant. After the separation she was mediatised with Nicolas Cabréa year and a half ago he started a relationship with Claudio “Peluca” Brusca40 years old, who was the producer of the program Welcome on boardwho was driving on Eltrece.
“Next to me I have a partner who is the best. I told him the acid test was the preview Matilda, which was the first time he met me anywhere near a premiere with all that entails. I told him that if he got over that, she would be over (laughs). And now the same thing has happened with the premiere of this work. He accompanies me a lot, he is a good person, he is very positive”, she confesses without hiding his love for her.
-We already know what you think about marriage: you’re not crazy about the idea…
-Many girls dream of getting married, but it doesn’t happen to me. I don’t really like celebrating my birthday, for example, I don’t like being the hostess or being the center of the party. Even though I am dedicated to being on stage and being seen by everyone, socially and privately I don’t like being the center. The times I celebrated my birthday with a lot of people, I made sure that everyone had something to drink, food, that they had fun, that I hung out with each group for a while, and eventually I became very stressed.
Maybe the same thing will happen to me when I get married… It’s also true that I’m still in a very young relationship, even though we already live together. Today I don’t feel the need to get married.
-Do you fantasize about having kids?
-I would like to become a mother, I hope it happens sooner or later. I always imagined myself as an adult mother, I never saw myself being a mother in my twenties. There is also something about personal fulfillment that I know today, as a mother, I could easily achieve. But If I were a mother I would like to be able to dedicate the same time to myself that my mother dedicated to me. For now we have a dog named Miel, who has filled us with love. When I work I miss it a lot. I get sick when I’m gone all day. He made our lives happy for both of us.
His father’s advice
Laurita Fernández always expresses gratitude to Pepe Cibrian, which opened the door to musicals; to his singing teacher Emi Fegger. She is a fan of such artists as Americans Sierra Boggess and Sutton Foster, and Elena Roger nationally.
Excited for Legally blonde, reflects: “I am very aware of the effort involved in paying the entrance fee. We discussed it with the team and that’s why we won’t hold anything back. We will leave everything, life in the show. Anyone who comes to the theater will feel that we are doing more than giving back to him for all the effort he has put in. We want to make the audience happy, because that’s what’s important, making them happy,” she says.
-What are the values that you believe that, despite having had such a successful career, you never negotiate and continue to maintain?
-Life has always put me in places and situations that I felt were a test. And I have always maintained respect and temperance. My father (Carlos) always told me this Decisions are like beer, they don’t get hot. I don’t like conflicts, irony or double meanings. And another thing that my parents instilled in me a lot is responsibility, awareness of work, commitment to what I want to achieve… And that the reward, after so much effort and sweat, has a different flavor.
