A few days after the release of his new studio album, Women don’t cry anymore, Shakira (47) opened up about the difficult time she went through after her controversial split from Gerard Pique (37) and what the creation of the album meant.
In an exclusive interview with Dominique Metzger for Night TV (El Trece), the Colombian singer talked about the creative process behind the songs and its feminist imprint.
“It was hard to start this album because It was broken”Shakira confessed. “Entering the studio, to work on ‘Monotonía’, which I remember was the first song that came out, when I felt like I had a hole in the middle of my chest.. And so this is the image from the video: you see me walking down the street with a hole,” she revealed, speaking about the meaning behind those harsh images.
“It was a physical sensation. And I started capturing all these emotions, ideas, feelings and opinions. “I was developing them as I put them into words,” the singer continued.
Dominique called Shakira “the new Moses of women”, explaining that the songs she released after their separation served to empower her listeners. “I went through an alchemical process of transforming painanger and frustration in creativity, in productivity, in strength, in resilience,” Shakira responded.
“But I didn’t do it alone, I also did it with all those women I met every day, who took me by the hand, who hugged me, who said ‘thank you’. So there I understood the process of my music,” he added.
On the other hand, Shakira thanked all her fans for accompanying her in this very difficult process: “It was a healing dialogue. I sing but you listen to me too. While I howled like a wounded wolf, my audience spoke to me. From there I was healing, “We were healing each other, we were building each other up.”
“And here we are, with an album of 16 songs, which are the reflection of all those life experiences, of that alchemical transformation, of very intense emotions. I have transformed into something more, something that represents not only myself but also many people who experience similar things or who can identify with me at some point in their lives,” she added.
When Dominique asked her what she feels when such young girls listen to her and appear on social networks singing her songs, Shakira responded with a strong phrase: “Women in many ways have a certain superiority.”
“Historically they made us believe that no, that because of Eve they kicked us out of paradise. That women must be pigeonholed into the role of victims, that we must face pain and suffering in silence, so that children do not find out. We must accept things as they come, with education, with elegance and sobriety in the face of adversity. Who said how we should heal?” He answered.
And she sent a message to her followers: «And today’s girls know it. Women rebuilt entire cities after the war, women know what needs to be done. Women support this society. And now we take charge of that feminine strength we have. And resilience. They made us believe that we are more fragile than we are”.
His friendship with Bizarrap
After the success generated by the collaboration between the Colombian singer and the Argentine producer, Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53the artists decided to reunite again for the song The strong.
In the Telenoche interview, Shakira also revealed that they are great friends. “Biza is the Argentine god. “He IS a genius”said of the young 24-year-old DJ born in Ramos Mejía.
“It’s like when hunger and the desire to eat come together. Between me and him we don’t know who is worse, we’re like a dog that doesn’t want to let go of the bone. When he’s in the studio, he doesn’t want to let go of the song. We were mixing Session 53 up until a second before it came out. I found my match“He added.
And, then, the artist continued to shower the producer with praise: “He’s very young, very committed, very disciplined, very dedicated to the work of creating a song and bringing it to the best of his ability. He is really attentive to detail. We are good friendsso much so that we made a second song.
Finally, he recounted the sweet message Biza sent him after the album’s release. “I get a lot of messages from friends and colleagues congratulating me on the album, but When I read Bizarrap’s comment I died. ‘Sha, I don’t want to bother you but I want to congratulate you on a great album. I’ve already listened to it in full three times. What talent you have, I always admire you. Congratulations, it’s fantastic from start to finish,’” she concluded.
