In recent days an audio has been released which could be the first recording of Charlie Garcia singing Vampire. The historical material was published by the YouTube channel RaritySNM, created by the musician’s fans (hence Say No More’s SNM). In it, the singer-songwriter is heard performing the song – which he only released professionally in 1991 – when he was just 12 years old, during a school trip to Córdoba.
Vampire It officially came out almost 33 years ago as part of Tango 4, Charly’s third album in his joint project with Pedro Aznar, while he was recovering from his first hospitalization for addiction. But apparently he started forging some ideas for the project much earlier.
“We have brought to light, already today, a very important document It would be the oldest known audio recording of Charly García. This relic belongs to Eduardo Blanco and has been preserved for 60 years,” he says at the beginning of the video, before showing the curious material.
And he continues: “It is about a school trip to Córdoba in 1964 in which students recorded greetings to send to their relatives in Buenos Aires. Charly, in addition to a greeting, sang a primitive version of the song which, decades later, became known like Vampire. Exciting jewel”.
Eduardo Blanco was a student at the Argentine Air Force School, the same elementary school Charly attended. For years he had owned this alleged first album of the musical career of the national rock icon, which his fans managed to see the light of day.
“And García Moreno, what do you think of that guitar?” says a teacher, while the students greet their parents from a distance. “AND… “I play the guitar very well,” replies young Charly.before performing what would become the first recording of his musical life, which, at the time, consisted of just three verses.
The first show of a great
The audio continues and a recording of the next day is heard, in which the teacher in charge introduces Charly, 12 years old, who will sing The vampire (as he said at the beginning on the topic) in front of all his colleagues.
“The young García Moreno will play us The vampire. All students present will accompany him. Go ahead,” the maestro says as he begins the first live performance of the song that would become a hit years later. “It’s my creation, yes sir,” he adds a second before the first chord is heard.
“This is the midnight green love, on the hunt that I already know. It sticks to your neck and the blood starts to flow“, the twelve-year-old musician begins to sing, accompanied only by his Creole guitar. “Vampire, let me sleep peacefully,” he continues in what would be the chorus melody of the song released 30 years later.
In the released audio, Charly sings the first 10 seconds of the first version of Vampire. Although he only managed to compose a small piece, he can feel the excitement of his companions and the loud applause he received at the end.
It seems that his first audience already loved his work and recognized that they were dealing with someone who would become a great artist.
