Can you imagine Benedict Cumberbatch like any other Marvel character other than the Doctor Strange/Stephen Strange? Well, that almost happened. In an interview with BBC Radio 1the protagonist of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” revealed that his first contact with the studio was, in fact, to play a villain in “Thor: The Dark World”, released in 2013.

“Doctor Strange happened after a little dance I had for another character in the MCU, a character with a very brief appearance”, said the star. This other character would be the Dark Elf Malekithwho after his refusal, went to Christopher Eccleston (“Doctor Who”). “I had the nerve to say, ‘I’m flattered to be invited to the party, but I’d rather wait for something more juicy'”he added.

Cumberbatch also commented that even after waiting and having read the script for the first “Doctor Strange”, he wondered if he really wanted to live the Supreme Wizard. “I read the comics and I didn’t like it, because he’s very old school, a little misogynistic, very much from the 1970s. I figured it wouldn’t be a great role, but they said it would be a modern, modern man, with some of those characteristics, but in a modern context where he thinks he’s great, because he needs that arrogance”he explained.

In the end, the decision was right, and today MCU fans can’t see anyone else, if not Benedict Cumberbatch like the real Stephen Strange from the big screen. The first film was shown in 2016, and introduced the character to the Marvel Universe, bringing all his origins to acquiring and controlling all his magic.

In “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, released in 2022, Strange will have to deal with the consequences of having messed with the multiverse after the events of “Spider-Man: No Return Home”, in which he performed a spell to help everyone forget what the webbender’s true identity was. And to top it off, he’ll make “friends” with a new MCU character, the young America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), which has the power desired by the Scarlet Witch in Elizabeth Olsen: travel through the multiverse.

“Doctor Strange 2” is still in theaters.
