Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer will reprise their roles
the filmmaker Rob Reiner announced that he will direct a sequel to “This is Spinal Tap”, a film that was the forerunner of the mocumentaries, a style of film that parodies and/or satires and tries to make us believe that what is seen on screen really happened. The information is from Entertainment Weekly.
“Spinal Tap II” will have Michael McKean as band frontman David St. Hubbins; Christopher Guest as guitarist Nigel Tufnel; and Harry Shearer as bassist Derek Smalls; while Reiner himself will reprise the role of documentarian Marty DiBergi.
At the beginning of May, the actor Ric Parnell passed away and will not be in the film. He played drummer Mick Shrimpton of the band Spinal Tap.
“When it was announced that Spinal Tap would reunite for a final show, Marty DiBergi saw it as a chance to set things right with the band who saw ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ as a mean job.“, he said reign in a statement.
“So he left his position as assistant visiting adjunct professor at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts in pursuit of film history.“, concluded the statement.
The original film follows the band Spinal Tap on the group’s disastrous tour of America in support of the Smell the Glove album. “This is Spinal Tap” was not a huge success on its initial release, but it soon became a cult phenomenon, particularly among musicians, and over time it became a comedy classic.
guest, McKean and Shearer gathered periodically to perform live as Spinal Tap and to record 1992’s Break Like the Wind and 2009’s Back from the Dead. The film’s cast also included June Chadwick, Bruno Kirby, Ed Begley Jr., Fran Drescher, Patrick Macnee, Ian Hendry, Dana Carvey, Billy Crystal, Paul Shaffer and Fred Willard.
“This Is Spinal Tap” will screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
