The life of [Elvis] fits perfectly into three acts”, declared Luhrmann.“You have Elvis, the punk, so to speak, the rebel, the first punk rocker; then you have Elvis the movie star when he was more pop and family friendly. And then you have 1970s Elvis, which is epic”.

According to the director, his intention with “Elvis” is to show a new generation that the singer was “the first young rebel for the masses”. “While I respect and love the fans, I’m opening up Elvis’ journey to a new audience that only knows the guy in the overalls and doesn’t understand that he was a rebel.”.

Luhrmann talked about his excitement at showing “the rise and fall” by Elvis, which will be lived by Austin Butlerand the infamous Colonel Tom Parker, agent of the King played by Tom Hanks. “[Parker] was really a circus scout, who saw this kid and said: ‘this is a great show’. That’s the beauty and tragedy of the movie”.

The musical will also show how Colonel Parker influenced Elvis’ dreams of becoming a respected actor. “That was the biggest sadness [de Elvis] – after the Army, he did all these musicals. He always wanted to play a big role, and he was capable of it. He would be in ‘A Star Is Born’ with Barbra Streisandbut the Colonel got in the way”.
