Composer won the Oscar for Best Score for the film “Chariots of Fire” in 1981
Vangelisthe Greek composer of two of the most iconic soundtracks of all time — “Chariots of Fire” (1981) and “Blade Runner” (1982) — has died at the age of 79.
Representatives of the musician told the British newspaper Guardian that he was admitted to a hospital in France. The cause of death was not revealed.
Born in 1943 as Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, he reached the height of fame in 1981, when he won the Oscar for Best Original Score for the feature “Chariots of Fire”. His music reached the top of the American charts and around here became the theme of the São Silvestre race.
self-taught, Vangelis was a member of the musical group Aphrodite’s Child and also scored films such as “Rebellion on the High Seas” (1984), “Francesco – The Story of Saint Francis of Assisi” (1989), “Happy Moon” (1992) and “Alexander” (2004).
On Twitter, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakispublished a note of grief over Vangelis’ death:
“Vangelis Papathanassiou is no longer with us. For the whole world, this sad news affirms that the music world has lost the international Vangelis. The protagonist of electronic sound, the Oscars, myth and great successes. For the Greeks, however, knowing that his middle name was Odysséas means that he began his journey on the Roads of Fire. From there he will always send us his messages“, wrote.
