“Top Gun: Maverick”, starring Tom Cruise, was applauded for 5 minutes after its airing
By normal standards, a five-minute round of applause for anything, whether it’s a movie, a concert, a speech, seems over the top. But by Cannes Film Festival standards, it’s not.
“Top Gun: Maverick”, latest movie starring Tom Cruise and directed by Joseph Kosinski, premiered in Cannes to a warm welcome from those in attendance on the French Riviera.
Those who were there say that the film received five minutes of applause after its screening. Check out a small part of the applause below:

Cannes’ tradition of long standing ovations is really uncomfortable. Well, know that the 5 minutes of applause received by the continuation of the 1986 classic is nothing compared to other films that have already passed through the Festival in previous editions.
That’s why CineBuzz made this short list of the six most applauded films in the history of the Cannes Film Festival. Remembering that this is a mere sample of some of the films whose applause was documented in their times. Check out:
- “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006) – 22 minutes
- “Fahrenheit 9/11” (2004) – 20 minutes
- “Love Bandit” (2012) – 18 minutes
- “Neon Demon” (2016) – 17 minutes
- “Capernaum” (2018) – 15 minutes
- “Obsession” (2012) – 15 minutes
