Colin Cantwell, one of the creators of the visuals for the X-Wing spaceships, TIE Fighter, Star Destroyer and also the Death Star from “Star Wars”, has died at the age of 90. The information was confirmed to Deadline by his wife, Sierra Dall.
The cause of death was not revealed, but the conceptual designer had posted on his Instagram account that he had been undergoing Alzheimer’s treatment for a few months.
In addition to “Star Wars”, Cantwell also signed other notable works such as the photo effects for “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), technical dialogue for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977) and computer graphics for “Games of War” (1983).
Before working in Hollywood, cantwell attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he majored in animation. He also attended the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.
In the 1960s, he worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and at the US space agency, NASA, on educational programs about flight. He even worked as a correspondent between the American base and the astronauts who landed on the Moon in 1969.
He even wrote two science fiction novels: “CoreFires 1” and “CoreFires 2”.
