The Cannes Film Festival celebrated its 75th anniversary on Tuesday night, bringing together a group of at least 120 stars and filmmakers from around the world, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Paolo Sorrentino, Isabelle Huppert, Diane Kruger, Guillermo del Toro, Jacques Audiard, Melanie Laurent, Gael García Bernal, and Nicolás Winding Refn.

Some of them, especially del Toro, participated in a symposium on Tuesday to discuss the new challenges facing cinema today.

The lineup of talent on the ground at the gala ceremony also includes a roster of stars and filmmakers presenting films at this year’s festival, along with Kristen Stewart, Lea Seydoux, Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg, among many others. .

Delegate General Thierry Fremaux of Cannes and President Pierre Lescure exchanged calls with each guest who joined them on stage to a roar of applause. Guests posed for a family photo in Cannes, and then García Bernal took the microphone and sang He by José Alfredo Jiménez with Del Toro.

“Cinema won’t die”

Fremaux opened the ceremony by saying a few words about the stability of cinema and the importance of Cannes in promoting the cinematic experience. “The cinema is not dead! Cinema is alive and will never die, ”said Fremaux, who received applause and applause.

Lescure, whom this year marked the final edition as president of Cannes, received the first standing ovation of the evening and gave a speech about the film festival’s legacy. The former Warner Bros. CEO Iris Knobloch will soon succeed him as festival president.

The ceremony was followed by the world premiere of I am innocent by Louis Garrel, starring Roschdy Zem and a sumptuous dinner prepared by Christian Sinicropi, the chef of the Palme d’Or restaurant, at the Marché Forville in the old town of Cannes.

the competition

The Cannes Festival is celebrating its anniversary and in its 75th edition it has brought together the great names in cinema in its competition. Four of them, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Cristian Mungiu, Ruben Östlund and brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, already known in the Palme d’Or, are seeking the award again. The appointment began on the 17th and will end on the 28th of May.

Japanese Kore-eda, awarded in 2018 for A Family Affair, will feature Broker; the Dardennes, winner in 1999 with Rosetta and in 2005 with The childthey do it in Tori and Lokitaand the Swedish Östlund, which in 2017 was surprised at The squarereturn to the Croisette with the Triangle of grief.

Romanian Mungiu completed the group, which in 2007 took the crown in 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days and this year is trying to re -prove the top title with NMRon the effects of European policies in Transylvania.

The grid was defined by a total of 2,200 applicant films, and the competition included French Arnaud Desplechin with Ffather and sisterwith Claire Denis noon stars, shot in Central America, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi included the lovers.
