Tom Cruise returns to theaters today with the long-awaited sequel to top gun (1986). After 36 years and more than a decade of projects, “Maverick” will bring the adrenaline we all know from Cruise, after all, the action star dispenses with stunt doubles and loves to bring more realism to the big screen.

The first film tells the story of Pete “Maverick” who is a US Navy fighter pilot, and, in the face of his disobedience and heroic persistence, he gains recognition and respect after doses of adrenaline with lots of action, drama and even romance during long directed by Tony Scott.

It was in 2010 that the first projects for the film’s sequel began to be developed, and even though it was considered “a dream project” by Justin Marks – quoted to be one of the screenwriters of the feature -, everything changed after Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott be called by Paramount Pictures to be part of the production again.

In August 2012, Tony Scott committed suicide after jumping off a bridge in Los Angeles, leaving a message in his office about his decision. Scott’s filmography is marked by several films such as The Subway 123 hijacking (2009), Uncontrollable (2010) and the first top gun (1986). After that, the future of the production remained uncertain even with the commitment and interest of Bruckheimer, Cruise and Kilmer.

After several delays to the release, initially scheduled for 2019, Paramount has hit the hammer and will release, this month, the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverickwhich after the complications brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 and has already been seen in a global premiere held on an aircraft carrier in San Diego, California.

SOUNDTRACK

In early May, singer and actress Lady Gaga released the track “Hold My Hand”, which is part of the soundtrack of Top Gun: Maverick. For the Bad Romance singer, the song expresses the need to understand the other and be understood.
