Character is inspired by the monster from “Dungeons & Dragons”
The characters of “Stranger Things” have faced dangerous monsters throughout the series, but the vecna seems to be the most menacing and dangerous of them all so far. After Demogorgon it’s the Destroyer of mindsyou Duffer brotherscreators of the Netflix production, drew inspiration from “Dungeons & Dragons” to develop the new villain.
For those who don’t remember, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Will (Noah Schnapp), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) started the series playing tabletop roleplaying games in season one and they never fully abandoned their passion for “Dungeons & Dragons”. This season, Mike and Dustin join the Hellfire Club to have some fun in their extra time.
During an epic match against Eddie (Joseph Quinn) at school, they mention the game’s big villain, Vecna, described as a “shriveled, scorched-skinned” monster. This is how the season’s villain earns his title.
Vecna was created for “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons”, the second edition of the RPG. He is an evil sorcerer who practices necromancy and manages to overcome death, going into an undead state and becoming a lich. Even after being defeated, he continued to seek power and ascended as an evil divine being.
In the game, competitors search for parts of Vecna’s body to use as artifacts of power. The main ones are hand of vecna, that empowers the user, and the eye of Vecnawhich grants clairaudience.
In the Netflix series, Vecna is a person with powers who was banished to the Upside Down decades ago and made the place his realm, connected to his body and mind. The character can be considered an evil version of Elevenas they have the same abilities, but use them for different purposes.
