Emilia Mernes, with her album.
Not many artists manage to release their first album. The career of a musician, especially in Argentina, is not easy. I know that Emilia Mernes (25) and that’s why she doesn’t take anything for granted. A few hours after the release of her album “Do you believe in me?”, The singer sat down for a exclusive interview with Clarin.
His solo career began in 2019, with the release of heat up. In the last year it has grown exponentially. Down to earth
At 25, Emilia realized the biggest dream she had when she first encountered music in Nogoyá, Entre Ríos, where it comes from. “My grandfather was the one who gave me my first guitar”.
The speech takes place in the middle of the launch of intoxicatedthe last cut of his album, with which he performs together Nicky Nicole. “I wrote to her and I said” my friend I have a song for you. But be honest, if you don’t like it no problem “and she said” yes, I love it, I’m riding “and broke it”
In a building in Palermo, in the offices of her record company since 2018, the singer finds herself in front of the camera, after a press conference that took her all day, with the joy of a person who sees a work of many take shape years. Behind her are Pedro and Gabriela, her parents, who came exclusively from Nogoyá to be with her at this launch.
Because even if Emilia has the Heaven in mind As the title of one of her songs says, she too has her feet on the ground, with her eyes fixed on her destination but always accompanied by her loved ones.

The speech
-What do you feel in these last hours before releasing your first album?
-It’s really crazy. I don’t measure it. I have seen it so far but I manage to materialize it. I’m really happy.
-What would you like people to take away from the album when they listen to it?
-I wish you had fun. There are very beautiful songs, with stories where I opened my heart to them. I think many will be able to identify. Besides the perreo, there are more intimate songs. More sensitive. I just hope you like it and that you like it. I did it with all the love in the world. We work with a very nice team. So much work behind us, so much sacrifice.
-Why did you choose the title “Do you believe in me?”
-Because I feel it fits a lot with my story. For me, believing in something is being certain that it is real. Being from such a small country, the one who trusted me first was me. Later, when I grew up and it all happened, a lot of people trusted me too. The fans trusted me. They believe in me. All of this has to do with my story and what happened to me. I thought it was nice to put it as the title of the album because it represents me a lot.
-In “Cielo en la mente” you talk a little about this second possibility, the revenge. Does it have anything to do with that?
-Yes, 100%. It is a motivational message. Like saying “I can do it”, even though many people have told me no and have pointed the finger at me. It’s a very nice message and I feel it’s a song for the fans. That many will be able to identify each with their own stories.

Collaboration with Nicki Nicole
– “Intoxicao” is the last cut of the album. How did it happen?
-We worked on it a couple of months ago and it seemed interesting to me because it’s a very Nicki style, half trap, half hip hop. I thought the idea of her union was very nice. I wrote her and said “Hey, man, I have a song for you but be honest, if you don’t like it, no problem”. And she said “Yeah, I love it, I’m going to ride a bike.” and she broke it. We went to the studio together and we finished it.
-In the video you are like some kind of mutant with powers. And you act a little. Do you see yourself dabbling in acting in the future?
-At the moment I’m fine with music; I love acting in my videos. I like to fit a character in every song. It depends on what you have to say. Now the problem of having to talk to the camera is a bit difficult for me, even more so with my entrerriano accent where I eat all the “S” I don’t know if they will want me for a soap opera! (laughs)

Her influences: from folklore to Christina Aguilera
-I heard you say that your grandfather was the one who gave you your first guitar. Can be?
-Yup.
-When you listen to the album, is this how you imagined your first album would be, when you played that guitar for the first time?
-I don’t know, I was very fond of folklore then. Nothing to do with what I’m doing right now. The truth is that until a year ago I was doing reggaeton and I didn’t know I would be singing R&B now. I feel my mindset and taste for music are expanding. I grew up listening to Pop, R&B, Hip Hop. And being able to experience it and create this genre of genre in the studio I love it. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it.
-In Latin girl call Christina Aguilera’s album “Back To Basics”. Did she have a big influence on you?
– Yes fully. Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Avril Lavigne, P! Nk. All pop divas are my biggest inspiration.
-Recently, María Becerra released a song with Camila Cabello and Tini with Christina Aguilera, in fact. Would it be a dream for you to collaborate with one of those artists?
-Obviously! In an ideal world, I dream and design it. Today I feel that Latin music is expanding so much that Anglo artists want to collaborate with us and it’s fantastic. We hope that one day it will happen.
The Argentine music scene, full of female presence.
The Argentine music scene
-By the way, how do you see the Argentine music scene? There is a lot of female presence …
It’s very cool, because I feel the camaraderie is super genuine. We are all with the same vision and the same projection. We push each other and that makes a difference. It is a pride for me that so many artists can represent us internationally and that their eyes are on Argentina.
-Duki, your boyfriend, participated tear down the club, which is like a trap anthem, in which many singers of that genre joined. Would you like to do something like this with your colleagues?
-It would be very nice to do something like this, all together. I’ve been saying this for a long time; you just have to get organized. It seems to me because we are all there to support each other and that would be very nice.
Emilia Mernes and Duki are part of the line up of the Boombastic 2022 festival in Madrid.
