Fan theories point out that the connection between Will Byers and the Upside Down didn’t end in Season 2
If you have already watched the first volume of the fourth season of Stranger Thingsyou certainly noticed that Will Byers was not as prominent in the new episodes. But in the end, is this on purpose?
To understand a little more about this theory, we need to remember a little about the second season. Will had just returned from the Underworld and was trying to adapt to real life again. However, visions and nightmares cause his behavior to change, as the boy was the host of the Mind Flayer, becoming a bridge between the two worlds.
Since Will was freed from his bonds with the Underworld, he has been feeling increasingly excluded by his friends. Eleven ends up permanently settling in Hawkins with Jim Hopper, which leads her to start a relationship with Mike. The latest addition to the cast, Max, also starts hanging out with the group even more, especially after getting close to Lucas. With Dustin away from town due to summer camp, Will feels increasingly lonely.
In season four, things get even worse. After the events of the battle at Starcourt Mall, the Byers move to California, trying to get away from all of Hawkins’ mess. Thus, Will is separated from his great friends, which makes their relationship even more delicate. The example we have of this is when Mike doesn’t seem to care much for his old friend during a Spring Break visit to California.
How will isolation affect Will?
The new Stranger Things villain, Vecna, has a very specific attack mode. He targets people who have unresolved trauma, enters their minds and in less than a week ends their lives in a terrible way. But what does that have to do with Will anyway?
As we saw in the last few episodes of the first part of this season, the Byers and Mike are on a constant search for Eleven. In the end, when they finally meet, everyone will go to Hawkins to defeat Vecna. Will, who until then was far from the villain’s reach, will be close enough to become the villain’s target. But will he be just another victim of the atrocities that haunt the city?
Fan theories say that Will’s connection to the Underworld didn’t end in season two when the Mind Flayer stopped being a parasite on the boy’s body. It all started when they noticed that Joyce Byers and Victor Creel used the following word to describe their children: “sensitive”.
According to Fábio Gomes’ TikTok (@1fabiogomes), Will may be just as strong as Vecna, as the final moments of the first volume revealed that the villain is the son of Victor Creel, who possesses telekinetic powers like Eleven. Therefore, his trip to the Underworld served to strengthen this plan, making it develop even more throughout the seasons.
Speculation ends by saying that Will will have the power to help Vecna and the Underworld or their friends. However, since Vecna can manipulate minds, will he easily bring Byers, who has been feeling left out by his friends for a while, to his side? Thus, Will Byers will have to choose between good or evil during the final battle.
The second volume of the fourth season of Stranger Things will premiere on July 1, 2022 on Netflix, but you can still create the most diverse theories until then.
