Filmmaker Louise Archambault spent just two months in Poland, a country bordering Ukraine at war, for the filming ofIrena’s vow. This English film, starring Sophie Nélisse, tells the true story of a nurse who risked her life to save Jews during World War II.

We shot some pretty difficult scenes. We had to put up signs in English, Polish and Ukrainian to warn passersby: “This is just a movie shooting”.
A scary actor
Louise Archambault explained that her family tried to convince her not to go somewhere near the front line. On the spot, he was accompanied by security guards, but never felt in danger.

The 56 -year -old actor plays Eduard Rügemer, a Wehrmacht officer who secretly collaborates with Polish nurse Irène Gut Opdyke – played by Sophie Nélisse – to hide 12 -year -old Jews in the cellar of her villa, who located near the Radom ghetto in occupied Poland.
For their bravery, Eduard Rügemer and Irène Gut Opdyke were designated Righteous Among the Nations, the highest honor given by the State of Israel to civilians.
Based on a Broadway play
Irena’s vow is an international co-production with a budget of over 5 million Canadian dollars. The names of Hollywood actresses were suggested to Louise Archambault to play the lead role, but she insisted on taking Sophie Nélisse, who Looks like Irena really isaccording to the filmmaker.

Patrice Robitaille plays Marc Côté, a street chaplain and parish priest who lives among the poor and homeless people of Montreal.
