There are few Argentine actors who, after having made a career here, manage to have the opportunity to work in a film or television series in the United States. Julieta Zylberberg has just joined that short list which includes Norma Aleandro, Gastón Pauls, Mia Maestro, Luisana Lopilato and Leonardo Sbaraglia, among others.

Zylberberg shot the series in Chicago and Jujuy night skyan original science fiction drama that is now available on the Amazon Prime Video platform.

Unlike most cases, Julieta embodies a main character who is pivotal in the story starring Academy Award winner JK Simmons (flick) and Sissy Spacek (bring).

A hearing in the midst of a pandemic

“It was all pretty weird,” Julieta tells Clarín. “Amazon called me asking for an audition in English and I told them I didn’t speak well. But they didn’t care because they were looking for an Argentine who spoke English like an Argentine. I auditioned, submitted a video and they loved it. He was in the midst of a pandemic, “she remembers her first contact with her.

night sky combines science fiction, suspense and fantasy to tackle a story told through two narrative lines. The main one is that of Irene and Franklin -Spacek and Simmons-, a couple who keep a supernatural secret in their shed: a portal that allows them to travel on a planet.

The other plot of the series centers on Stella, the character of Zylberberg, and her daughter Tony – played by the Argentine Rocío Hernández -, who keep the same secret as Irene and Franklin, but in the multicolored hills of Jujuy.

“Jujuy was the last thing we shot, after returning from there (he spent three months in Chicago, USA), in October 2021. It was a much hasty experience than I’m used to. They are those projects that we generally don’t access here. It is like a sector that is very distant from ours. “

-Was it a fantasy to work in the United States?

-No, the truth is that for nothing. I never thought about it because I don’t speak English. In other words, I’m talking about the basics: if I travel I can order a hamburger or move. He didn’t drive me crazy, but he was really cute and very curious. It was a gigantic production, much bigger than what we were used to.

Spacek, Simmons and the role of Campanella

Juan José Campanella, who has been directing American series for some time. he is an executive producer and has also directed two episodes of night sky. But her presence did not influence the decision to shoot in the north of the country or to turn to Argentine actresses.

“I didn’t meet him. He directed the first chapter and part of the second, but not the Argentine part. He was the showrunner and he was part of the project, but I don’t really know when. And I don’t know if when they wrote it it happened. in Mexico or if Argentina was already in the script, ”explains Zylberberg.

-What was it like working with two Oscar-winning actors like JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek?

-I had a few scenes at the end. They were very loving. With all that alienates us, mostly because we have grown up with American audiovisual productions for a lifetime. So almost as if they were part of a fantasy, part of the imaginary but not of real life. But the truth is, they were both very generous, with good vibes and good companions.

The other Argentina of Night Sky

Used to working in commercial and large production films and series like wild tales Y the bronze garden (HBO); and in popular Polka novels, Julieta explains that the big differences with Hollywood are on a level of magnitude.

“Basically, they have a much bigger industry. There were a lot of people working, all the roles were very divided, which gives a feeling of distance because everything is someone. Everything was mega. Nobody knew anyone, because a lot is shot. of things. Here I make a film and almost always, with at least six people, I have worked many times, “he said.

-You shared a set with another Argentine, Rocío Hernández.

-Yes, luckily there was Rochi, who plays my daughter. We became very friends, because they have other ways, and we were very far from our homes. It was important to be the two together there.

Beyond the size of the production, what did you like about the project?

-The story is beautiful. What I like is that, although the series is science fiction, it is based a lot on human relationships, on duels. Each character has their own story. The story of my character is great: she is a mother who lives isolated in the middle of the mountain, with her daughter, with her lamas; She looks like she has a restructured life, but after two minutes you realize she has a gigantic past and present that are very murky.

And he hides it from his daughter.

-Yup. But yes or yes, she will have to start revealing it. And that will change them. Later, throughout the series, my character begins to question the basis on which she built his life: her beliefs and his morals. All stories have a very creative human side. Both (Simmons and Spacek) are great but the story is terrible. The idea is for everyone to take a break and change, because life is not just one, but there are times when you can mix and give again. It looks beautiful to me.

Pros and cons of streaming

Perhaps due to the global reach provided by streaming platforms, it is now more common to see co-productions between two or more countries and exchanges of talent, both of actors – remember that Robert De Niro recently shot in the country – and of directors.

“We hope that globalization brings something new. Because everything always goes wrong for us. I think this is happening. I don’t know if so many productions arrive from abroad. But there is something that begins to cross a lot between Mexico, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, which seems fantastic to me. There is something about the absolute rise of platforms, which for me has things that aren’t that good, but there are also things that are good, that is starting to come together as a whole.

What things don’t seem so good to you?

-The cinema is in a very complicated place and this generates a frightening sadness and disappointment in me. At least here in Argentina there is no legislation for actors and the platforms pay nothing for image rights. This is wrong. I guess it will be ordered because everything is very new. Two years ago there was nothing and suddenly there are 70 platforms! But, well, everything changes very quickly and runs very fast. Hopefully they can coexist and there is a place for cinema.

-What seems to have gone out of place is the local narrative.

-The local fiction has disappeared. When I was a girl there was the midday novel, the afternoon novel for children or adolescents, the family novel, the most scandalous, and there were also unitaries. Now there is nothing. It’s terrible. It is one decline but I suppose the other will begin to multiply and it will not affect everyone’s work.

Did they call you about something on television?

-No. There is nothing! I know they are running ATAV (Argentina, land of love and revenge) now. But there is only one on each channel. It is a disaster. There are 80 entertainment programs that I don’t know what they are because I don’t have a TV; I don’t watch TV. However, there is nothing to see.

Two films and a farewell to the theater

These days, Zylberberg is carrying out the latest functions of a new revival of the one-man Feverwritten and directed by Mariana Chaúd, presented on Friday in June at 9pm at the Nün Teatro Bar.

“Here I am alone with my soul and with an imaginary turtle called Fever” sums up the work that debuted for the first time in 2019 and which marked his debut in the solo genre. “When I started I thought I would get a little bored, because I love acting with colleagues. But the truth is, I’ve discovered a beautiful universe, ”she says.

“It’s a very funny and dramatic job. It’s like a black comedy: it’s about madness, because basically it’s a character that’s in full swing. It is delusional. And he is also frighteningly lonely and helpless, with beautiful extracts of lucidity. And it has extraordinary musical moments.

A few weeks before the reopening Fever, Zylberberg made two films. He was placed under the orders of Ariel Rotter (Incident light, Bilardo, the football doctor) in a blue birda drama with touches of romantic comedy which he stars together with the Uruguayan Alfonso Tort.

“They are a couple who have been together for many years and who are trying to have a child and it is complicated for them. And things happen that make everything explode in the air. It’s a movie sweetness, “she says.

At the same time it rolled The Tangalanga methodthe biopic of the humorist directed by Mateo Bendesky and which sees Martín Piroyansky in the role of the telephone joker.

“There I make a parallel love story. Because Tangalanga starts making jokes to make one of her sick friend laugh. And I’m a secretary at the clinic where that friend of hers is hospitalized. This is fictional, “she explains.
