The director assured that he’s still working on the script, since he wants to make sure the story feels like another installment of the franchise, true to what audiences already know, but with entirely new characters.

“I think for the universe of Star Wars to expand, it must really expand. I don’t think it will add anything if I go into the universe and make a movie that when everyone sees it says: ‘Oh dude, look, those are the plans for the Millennium Falcon, oh, and that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.‘”.

After giving that example, he added: “It’s all great, but I would like to propose something new and develop new characters, just expand the world, otherwise I think it would be a very small and limited story.”

For his part, he commented on the new plans: “They have been on the move all the time. When we leave the saga, we have all this fantastic and exciting work. We want to be very sure. And we have some great talents we’re working with – people who care deeply about what’s next Star Wars“.

Waititi is developing Star Wars alongside co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who earned an Oscar nomination for writing the one-take war thriller,1917by Sam Mendes.
