Bianca Del Rio is one of the most popular names in the world of drag and LGBTQIA+ community. At the end of March a tour of Latin America began not cleanedhis new stand up show that brought him to Buenos Aires for the first time.

Last Sunday and Monday it filled two Opera Theaters and added a third date for today Week 10, after passing through Chile, Mexico and Peru. “It’s fun. Everything is a bit vague for me because I just arrived ”, he tells Clarín after its premiere.

“It was a day to fly, I had to ride fast, so it was like a drag race challenge,” he added. Del Río is known by many as the drag queen who won the sixth season of Drag Race by RuPaulthe reality show which is in its fourteenth edition and airs here on Netflix.

acid humor

theHailing from New Orleans, United States, Roy Haylock is responsible for giving life to the charismatic character. She started her artistic career as a costume designer and has since established herself as a reality star -eight years ago- thanks to a clever, acid and incorrect political humor.

-This is your first time in Argentina. What are your expectations?

-Not much, because that was my debut. I was happy with the idea that someone could understand me.

-What can you say about the show, not cleaned?

-We talk about everything. We are talking Drag Race by RuPaulof things going on in the world, of Covid.

“I noticed fanaticism in Argentina”

-You filled in two Opera and added a third. Were you surprised at this level of response in Argentina?

-I’m always surprised to think that someone likes me. I’m a very lucky person that so many people are interested in what I do. Here in Argentina I noticed a bit of fanaticism and enthusiasm because I had never been here before. In America they’ve seen me enough, they’ve seen me enough, so it’s nice to go to a place where people are very welcoming, sociable and kind.

-How does this have to do with the reality seen on Netflix, a global platform?

I think most people know me from there. That’s where it all started for me, eight years ago. And of course also through social networks. Now this is happening through social networks, in large part.

The Will Smith Scandal

With his clownish alter ego, he stars in movies typhoon bianca at Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia with Hate, both available on Netflix; and some of someone’s comedy shows: This is Jester Joke, Rolodex of Hate at Not Now Biancasome of them have become TV specials.

-All your activities are pretty scandalous, you laugh at everyone. Is there any topic you consider unsuitable for humor?

-No. Nothing. I was in charge of the show, so obviously scandalous, I had a wig. It was pretty awful. We try to find humor in everything, and that’s the most important thing, especially in recent years, that we have to laugh at everything.

-What happened to you when you saw the Chris Rock-Will Smith scandal?

-I am not interested. Who the fuck care what millionaires do? They both go to hell, they’re both millionaires in slaps. I’m bald too, what do I care.

-Don’t you see this as proof that comedy is harder nowadays?

-That’s the point. This is comedy. And if you have a problem there, don’t look, don’t consume, don’t go. And if you want to be a miserable son of a bitch, live your way. Don’t take everything seriously.

I don’t care about Chris Rock and Will Smith.

-And if someone feels resentment at a joke you make about being fat or skinny?

-Depending on the context. As for Chris Rock and Will Smith, I don’t care. It’s an award show for millionaires who get awarded for acting in a movie, how ridiculous? I’m not interested, and they don’t care about me either, so I don’t care.

Joan Rivers of the drag world

Honored by the New York Times as “the Joan Rivers of the drag world,” Haylock has sold out theaters around the world, from the Big Apple’s iconic Carnegie Hall to London’s Wembley Arena, the first drag to headline a show there.

“Joan Rivers is a great compliment. I met him and I think he is very smart, very funny, very smart and very hardworking. ”

-You make TV, movies and you act in theaters. Where are you more comfortable?

-I prefer the live audience. I am happier and I enjoy them more because they are human. When you’re filming, you’re in front of the camera. It’s like taking a picture, it’s not funny. It’s fun when you’re talking to someone, when you see their reaction, when you’re joking and you have an answer.

Bianca Del Rio, a product itself

Haylock has long exploited the public’s interest in himself. She already has her own make -up remover, “The Bianca Remover” – now it’s one of the best -selling beauty products on Amazon; and a vodka brand, “Holy Vodka Bianca Del Rio”.

It also has a weekly podcast available on Spotify and all major platforms; and wrote a book, the best -selling “Blame It On Bianca Del Rio” published by Harper Collins in 2018.

“I have been working as a drag queen for 26 years. But Drag Race introduced me to the whole world. It wasn’t something I planned, at all. I also didn’t plan on being a drag, so I’m so thankful to be able to work, to be able to travel, to be able to show, to have an audience. I can’t complain, ”Roy said.

-What happens to you when you see that the drag scene becomes more mainstream?

-I am not interested. I don’t give a shit what they do or season 14 of drag racing. I am too busy working.

-Do you think you help make the scene wider?

-It is very specific. Why does everything become certain? Comedy is comedy, regardless of whether it’s a drag queen, a man, a woman or a lesbian. This is comedy. Why does everyone have to be ‘the first drag queen to put on lashes’ or ‘the first queer to do such a thing’? It doesn’t matter anymore. It’s comedy, and you’ll enjoy it or not. I’m not one of those who thinks everyone should be categorized. It’s a hobby.

-Labels are hard to escape.

-It’s just that, maybe it’s not necessary when it comes to comedy. Comedy is what it is. I chose to stand up, not to say I was better or worse than a drag queen or anything else. Everyone does differently. I chose this, I’m not in the music industry.

What he laughs at and his favorite comedians

-What makes you laugh?

-Everyone. You have to find humor in everything, because it is a very depressing world. I laugh at everyone. If someone falls on the street, I laugh. When I look at myself in the mirror I laugh.

-Which comedians do you like?

-It’s hard to find comedians because they can influence you in what you do. But there are people I love. I think Chris Rock is brilliantly funny. I like Wanda Sykes, I liked and met a lot and I respect their work.

-And your great references or influences?

-Well, obviously Joan Rivers and Don Rickles. I love a lot. Unfortunately, most of them are no longer with us.
