Singer, actress, composer and writer, Joaquinha Lerena’s alter ego never stops launching new musical productions. In May, La Joaqui released the song 38 with Kenzy and May Creizy and in June Mission 08 with DJ and producer Alan Gómez.

Previously, in the summer, he sang La Joaquí Pike with El Noba and in February Much with juicy BAE. In addition, he stood out at the Lollapalooza Argentina 2022 festival

These are just the latest works by an artist who released her first single in 2013, the year she was a semifinalist at Red Bull Batalla, the first Argentine to reach that stage and a cult figure in the freestyle scene ever since.

But she was always restless, so she went from rap to trap and then to acting, distinguishing herself in 2017 as La Mecha, Diosito’s girlfriend in the series. The fringe. Shortly after she was the protagonist of another production: rooster days.

Back to music from the days of the pandemic, La Joaqui now has the theme as a hit mission 08, which has more than 1.7 million views on YouTube. Therefore, she is the first woman called for the turreo genre, a sub-genre of Argentine urban music, such as RKT, malianteo and cumbiatón.

The plan to release many songs in a row

According to him, coffee in hand, “My idea is to be able to maintain the consistency of being able to release a new song a week, a plan that is still taking shape. This gives the freedom to be able to release something with a style and then be able to turn directly to another thing, without ceasing to be yourself or one thing going out of style until you do the other. Let it all flow and don’t try to plan everything for the long term. In the end, emotions are catharsis and that is what one feels in a moment, and one grows and changes and thinks and changes “.

-One is not a thing.

-Total. So I want to design and start working this way.

-What else do you want to show, what’s coming?

-Now it’s all RKT, which is a dance and bowling sound, like to have some fun. And then I want to pour something totally different, which I have already assembled in half but I want to wait for it to come out so that it generates a nice and surprising impact.

-When did you do “Mission 08”? The video looks like a blockbuster.

-Three months ago. It turned out very well and I really enjoyed it. I have wanted to do it with Alan Gómez for a while, who besides being a producer is a DJ. I wanted to create it like this, working from scratch, as if it were a remixed song. The RKT sound is something I dare say is the DJ sound, because they made it, mixing and remixing other stuff.

Has the pandemic changed your plans, in terms of having to anticipate or delay projects?

-It worked in my favor because I had stopped my career for many years and wanted to completely renew my profile and do something different. I’ve been making music since I was 15, so it’s not that I’ve changed, but that I’ve grown up and like other things, other tastes, other interests, other thoughts. I also defined my ideologies and what I believe in more. So I wanted to be able to create from scratch and maybe carrying all that artistic past limited me. The parade was useful to make a clean sweep.

-Your next album would be to return to take your place?

-It is true that I have been absent for three years and have deleted my networks and my videos, but I feel more like doing something I like, regardless of whether others like it or not. And it had never worked like that. This time I did what he painted, without thinking much about it.

-The first step was when you got “38”?

-Yup. It was the first cut of the EP which will feature five songs. I made 38 with two girls who just started RKT and are breaking up. I wanted the message to be that we all get along, even if the male chauvinism of the environment only wants there to be one.

-Was the freestyle scene very macho when you started?

-I think so, but at that time I didn’t feel like that because I was a very macho woman too. I made jokes that didn’t match and I had a much more retrograde thinking than now, because I had grown up in the 90s and was raised among the quilomberos boys. I have accompanied all the changes that have taken place and I also feel quite responsible. I have dedicated all my adolescence to certain things that change and today I see a certain right to an apartment that is not paid for, and this makes me proud.

the current scene

-You who were a pioneer, how do you see the current moment of urban music?

-Today Argentina is a world power in music. There are many parts of the world looking here. The barriers were broken and bridges were built in places that seemed unreachable. This gives a lot of expectations, illusions and hopes to the one who is initiating. Before, it all seemed like a utopia to make a living from rap. I think it all started when Duki released the Non vendo trap video. Cazzu and Duki were two very important people to generate this overcrowding. YSY A.

-Do you feel like a veteran of the scene, who has known everyone since they started?

-I like having the opportunity to see how everything exploded, because maybe it makes me evaluate things differently. And that’s why I now dare to come up with anything because I know it’s profitable if you really put the time, work and love into it.

shows and tours

-How did you pass it to Lollapalooza?

-Optimal. It is an incredible stage and the sound is tremendous. People are very cool and there is a great energy. I had fun and we managed to put something together with a band, which is what I like the most but you can’t do that in the bowling alleys.

– After you were on tour?

-Yup. I was all over the interior of the country and Uruguay, with shows every weekend. In August we go to Colombia, Chile and the United States.

The acting

-And what’s your facet as an actress, or do you want to take a break from that?

– I want to re-I want to act! Even more than before, because I think I would face it with less shame. I like series and novels, but I’d also like to do something in a movie. I would like to start with a crazy role or make a horror movie! Develop a character that is in tune with tension.

-You can do both, what is your experience on this?

-It depends on the time it takes to work everything. It’s not the same as reciting and composing a song to be released once a week. But always dedicating the time that everyone requires.
