The film Argentina, 1985arouses great anticipation for the historical theme it deals with, the trial of the military dictatorship, and for its cast in the roles of real characters at a pivotal moment in the country’s history. It has a stellar cast led by Ricardo Darín in the role of lawyer and prosecutor Julio César Strassera and Peter Lanzani, in the role of his colleague Luis Moreno Ocampo.

Santiago Miter (who has already received awards for some of his previous works such as the band Y The range), he directed this film and also wrote the screenplay with his longtime collaborator, colleague Mariano Llinás (The flower, extraordinary stories).

Now Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films announces its theatrical release for on September 29 this year.

Prosecutors who made history

Argentina, 1985 is inspired by the true story of the team of magistrates led by Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo who, accompanied by a group of young people, in their battle against power David against Goliath, dared against all odds and under constant threat, to pursue the leaders of the bloodiest military dictatorship in Argentina.

The goal was do justice to the victims of repression exercised during the years of de facto government and even some peace for those who had survived that horror a few years earlier.

The new film by Santiago Miter, in addition to telling the relationship between the two prosecutors – at that moment, Strassera was already a figure with a career, while Moreno Ocampo began his career in Justice-, also deals with many lesser-known stories of all the people who have been involved in the undertaking of a historical and unprecedented judicial process in the world.

International recognition

The process has been internationally recognized as the “Argentine Nuremberg”and it was erected as an emblem of that democratic spring that was encouraged to judge, repudiate and condemn those responsible for the military dictatorship that developed between 1976 and 1983.

Just as the film refers to a real event, the filming was also carried out in environments where historical events took place, such as the streets surrounding the Flag Monument, in Rosario, as well as other locations in Buenos Aires and Salta.

The idea for this film started to take shape in 2018 and was supposed to start shooting in 2020 but, as with many other productions, filming had to be postponed due to the pandemic and it was only possible to shoot in the middle of 2021.

This project is a co-production by La Unión de los Ríos, Kenya Films and Infinity Hill. They were also joined as producers by Axel Kuschevatzky, Federico Posternak, Agustina Llambi-Campbell, Ricardo Darín, Santiago Miter, Santiago Carabante, Chino Darín and Victoria Alonso, while the executive producers are Cindy Teperman and Phin Glynn.

After its big screen premiere in Argentina, Argentina, 1985, will arrive on the Amazon Prime Video platformwhere it will be available in more than 240 countries, although the date has not yet been announced.

With this theatrical release date, in the last quarter of the year, Miter’s film is in time to enter the international festival season. According to these schedules, the film could compete, in different sections, at the Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian festivals and search from there, a tour of other countries.
