But the numbers are not enough to imagine the size of a band that reaches the level of popularity of La Vela Puerca, born in the Uruguayan underground scene, mixing rock, ska and punk attitude.

The strength of their shows, the energy of their audience, and the addiction of their songs are better ways to describe them. Furthermore, their fans perceive an honesty and sincerity that go beyond the extent of their current summoning power, which allows them to travel throughout Latin America and continue to make a foothold in Europe.

Sebastián Teysera and Sebastián Cebreiro are El Enano and El Cebolla, the two main singers and composers of La Vela Puerca, a large group of eight members. Together, they dominate the stage and are the usual voice of the group when it comes to releasing an album and giving interviews.

Beyond the big national tour they are doing, in Buenos Aires they will play on October 6 at Luna Park. “We made several – Cebolla recalls – as a couple of Seguidillas in 2009, with the Bushmen, a theater group, Riki Musso and another with Santullo. In 2013 we recorded the DVD Uno para todos. This must be the fifth time”.

El Enano adds: “This is the first time we present an album. Before, it was always a touring show or an anniversary celebration.”

“The beauty of Luna Parks – says Cebolla – is that they are like two sides of the same coin: it is an impressive sight, but at the same time you can sing a song almost whispering it and there is that communion of an intimate place. And suddenly ! You have 8,000 guys singing to you and covering the volume! It’s something that seduces us and that’s why we always put together a small set of three or four very intimate songs. It’s impossible in an outdoor venue. “

According to El Enano, “At festivals there are other bands and a time limit, so you have to be more precise and the parable of the time you put together is much shorter. We like to give up that dynamic and not all be awake.”

the new album

-How much of the album have you already played live?

Onion: – Six themes. We come from touching them in the Iberian Peninsula. Before, on March 24th at the Centenario stadium, we only did two songs: The pillwho had a video with Archer, and Play with fire, released the day before but without video. We’re adding four more to the tour of Spain, and we’re adding two more to the upcoming tour.

Nano: -We have to put together the Luna show, because if we do the whole album there are twelve songs, and we have to see which are the classic songs that cannot be left out. Also, you need to see what other songs accompany them.

Onion: -We once did a slideshow of the disc playing four songs together, then a separate block, then four more new songs and so on. Seba was just telling me that this time she wanted to confuse them a bit. Make the integration of new topics more organic.

Nano: -What has to do with the music and the atmosphere of the show. If there’s a song on this album that fits well with another early song, do it one after the other. We don’t want to give that bombastic “Now comes the new disk block” thing.

-How did the tour in Spain go?

Onion: -We have been in Spain for 20 days and have done 10 concerts. That was the first test of the songs, even if it’s also a bit tricky because it’s the first meeting with a lot of people who feel like you’re bringing a little piece of their land. Note that most of the audience ends up being Uruguayan, Argentine or from other Latin American countries. It helped us to make these new songs coexist and to understand where we are from in order to face and face them.

Nano: – It was an exciting and intense tour. We haven’t been there for three years.

-What was making the album like in times of pandemic?

Nano: -It was a new way of doing it. The first twist of this album was that it was born in an atypical way. All the La Vela albums were born from a melody, a chord sequence and the guitar. Then we would take her into the living room and dress her together. Plus, we were all in one room together.

-It was not possible with imprisonment and quarantine.

Nano: -Yup. And this time it all started with the bass lines, because we wanted to make an album “up”, rhythmic. We didn’t know how many bass lines we did, and the new way to do it was step by step. I have a studio at home, so the bass player and the drummer came. Then came the guitarists, then the winds and finally the choirs. Right at the end we all got together and polished it a little more. We had never done things like this, in layers, almost the other way around. It was nice!

The letters

-Do you see the presence of the pandemic flying above the tone of the lyrics?

Nano: -It was written in a pandemic, but that tone is not something new. Likewise, the idea of ​​making an album a little higher was already there before the pandemic, and I liked that dichotomy. I imagined the listener washing the dishes and moving his paw to the beat, but he sang that everything was wrong. (laughs)

cabolla: -I think rock lyrics are born out of drama. They are drama films. There aren’t many happy songs, born of light and joy. However, they do not end in pessimism. These texts end with the door open. One of my lyrics says “Turn that pain of blows into wild caresses and kisses”.

Nano: -There are many things I heard at that time about what was happening, when we were constantly talking about the death rate as if it were the price of the dollar. When i did Play with fire there was Colombia, with all the people on the street, just like in Chile.

– Do you define yourself as a pessimist or do you think that changes can be achieved?

Nano: -I think we all try to contribute as much as possible from what we had to do in this life, by doing what we do. All things have their pros and cons, good things and bad things, but there are times when reality overwhelms you and you get a little sad. Maybe it’s my fault that I put in that amount of romance, the way I am.

Onion: -Sometimes it is a question of seeing the positive in the negative. As the lyrics say Heaven: “I know we are losing. The only thing left is to find a different path without changing lanes.”

Onion: -We have already done many different cities in Argentina and we still have Cordova, Rosario and Buenos Aires. In between we have Chile, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay.
