Elvis, with Tom Hanks, is bright, flashy and funny

Elvis it’s sleek and ostentatious, has an almost outrageously opulent production design, like every other Baz Luhrmanthe Australian who has a new classic like Moulin Rouge! and one mess ruins another, like The Great Gatsbywith Leo Di Caprio.

Luhrmann likes to please the public, or it should be said that the one who understands is his audience, because the director of romeo + juliet is perceived and filmed as an author, rather than as a director, and just as he throws all the paraphernalia he can on the screen, he becomes trapped in a plot that stretches for almost 160 minutes, when a power of synthesis – or to a friend who had warned him or placed limits on the assembly table, it would have been, perhaps, perhaps, in one of those, more advisable.

With Elvisthe film and the character, Luhrmann meditates on the music, legend and commercial activity behind an idol, a man who would revolutionize music, not just in the United States.

But Elvis doesn’t start with Elvis, but with Colonel Parker, a Tom Hanks – always a buyer, even if he plays an unscrupulous character – with prosthetic rubber nose and cheeks, who after a heart attack will tell us the story of the boy turned into a star. “Without me there would be no Elvis Presley,” he boasts.

Parker was a trader, a showman who knew how to handle a star like Elvis at will, who made his life impossible, who kept 50% of his earnings, and for whom – and he had a lot, a lot clear – the economic aspect the benefit was above music and art.

Elvis moves his pelvis and the women go crazy. Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”) plays the king.

And the principles.

Well, Colonel Parker – who was not a colonel and his name was not even Parker – had his own, and they were the ones who governed his life and, moreover, that of his client.

Tom Hanks is Colonel Parker, who was not a colonel and was not named Parker. He was Elvis' greedy manager.

The problem that arises with Luhrmann’s films manifests itself when it denotes the realization, when the film is more important than the story, or even the protagonist.

Luhrmann likes to push the viewer away. How to slap him by mixing cultures. I had already done it inside Moulin Rouge!Included smells like Teen Spirit, of Nirvana, at the beginning of the 20th century. Here also passes the “confusion”, that is the creative and historical freedom, let’s say insert, better than incorporate? other songs out of tune -Britney Spears, thankful-.

Las Vegas. Much of the film takes place in Sin City.

There is the Elvis who moved the pelvis, there is the greedy parasite of Colonel Parker, and there is the birth of the idol. OK, maybe the younger one didn’t know before entering the cinema that Elvis knew how to combine musical styles, black music and blues, to surprise everyone.

Austin Butler and Tom Hanks

Austin Butler’s performance is very good, making it clear that he doesn’t look like Elvis. The actor who was Tex Watson, Charles Manson’s right hand man Once upon a time … in Hollywood it’s on screen most of the time … when Tom Hanks isn’t.

Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann’s film sometimes shocks the viewer, as the director of “Moulin Rouge!” Likes.

Because the film could also be titled including the colonel’s name.

In any case, Elvis It is a show. What are you suffering from? And yes, but it has fun, it has fun.
