The disappointment was short-lived for 6-year-old Phoenix Prince, a fan of singer The Weeknd. The image of the little boy crying at the announcement of the cancellation of a concert by the artist in Toronto went around the web, so much so that it was worth meeting the interpreter of save your tears.
The story begins on the night of Friday, July 8. The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is supposed to kick off his After Hours Til Dawn tour at the Rogers Center in his hometown of Toronto, Canada. But the 32-year-old singer canceled the concert at the last minute due to a nationwide outage from Canadian phone giant Rogers.
Among the disappointed viewers was Phoenix Prince. A user posted on Twitter the photo of the little boy, dressed in the same red jacket as The Weeknd in the clip of blinding lights, being comforted by his father. The singer saw the snap and shared it on his own account, asking his fans, “Can someone please find it for me?”
This unexpected attention earned Phoenix and his father Blake an interview with the Canadian outlet CBC. “Phoenix has been a fan of The Weeknd ever since he discovered his music two or three years ago,” he explained. “With the costume he stood out. At the time of the cancellation, he collapsed. He was unhappy about the postponement and someone took a picture.”
The little boy confided his dream of meeting the singer: “I would tell him that he is the best artist and that I love his songs and that he is too good (…) And I would ask him for an autograph.”
Meeting on the sidelines of another program
The appeal has been heard. as reported NME, The Weeknd invited the young fan and his father to Philadelphia a week later for the second concert of his tour. As shown in photos posted by Blake Prince on Instagram, the little boy even got to meet the singer, who put an autograph on his red jacket.
“Words couldn’t describe last week,” Blake wrote in the caption. “Nous sommes si reconnaissants pour ce moment. Nous sommes plus que reconnaissants envers Abel et sa merveilleuse équipe pour leur amitié, leur hospitalityité, leur générosité et pour avoir passé une journée avec Phoenix et moi. Il chérira cette expérience pour toujours. Merci un million sometimes.”
Like all the other spectators, he had been waiting for this concert for three years, the show having been postponed twice due to the coronavirus. According to a post by The Weeknd, this show will take place; the postponement date has not yet been communicated.
