“Notre-Dame de Paris” lands on Broadway and conquers the New York public

Almost 25 years after its launch in France and two decades touring the world, this French musical is presented in Manhattan.

Songs that have traveled around the world, so much so that some even know them by heart. But it is in French, subtitled in English, that the demanding New York public discovers these days the musical Notre-Dame de Paris.

Created in 1998 by lyricist Luc Plamondon and composer Richard Cocciante, this adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name was a phenomenal success when it was released. It promoted the careers of Hélène Ségara, Tina Arena, Patrick Fiori or even Garou. For 20 years, the tour has toured 23 countries with 15 million tickets sold.

“We are strong because of everything we have done in the past”

Playing near the mythical Broadway avenue, where the best musicals in the world are presented, inevitably sounds like a maximum consecration for Richard Cocciante:

“We expected all the success in the world to happen, and now we are strong from everything we have done in the past,” he analyzes. “It gives us strength and we believe that now we can try to face something more difficult.”

And the New York public seems conquered: “I had already seen it before, I know all the songs and all the lyrics, I didn’t even need to read the subtitles. We are very happy that the musical comedy is finally here,” he confided. one of them leaving the room. “The actors were absolutely brilliant, bringing the story to life exactly as I hoped,” added another. The return to France is scheduled for November 2023 at the Palais des Congrès, where the adventure began almost 25 years ago.
