After conquering cinemas around the world with avengers endgame ($2.7 billion at the box office), Anthony and Joe Russo are back to break the streaming platform’s records. With the spy thriller the gray manthe two brothers make the most expensive production in the history of Netflix with the ambition of launching a franchise in the line of james link Where Mission Impossible.
Adapted from a series of bestselling novels by Mark Greaney, the gray man follows the Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), a fearsome CIA hit man who is now the target of Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a psychopath hired by the intelligence agency to track him down across the world and eliminate him. The film, available from this Friday on Netflix, is a breathless thriller with no downtime, with many very impressive action scenes.
“We wanted to create a relentless action movie, with action scenes that never stop, where the viewer runs with the character, from start to finish,” explains BFMTV’s Anthony Russo. “We were very ambitious for these action scenes. There are nine of them in the movie! It was expensive, it was difficult, but Netflix totally supported us. It was amazing.”
Without Netflix, the film would not have seen the light of day, insists Joe Russo: “They provide valuable financial support. They take risks. They are very nice to work with. its ability to reach the whole world was impressed. Don’t forget that going to the movies is very expensive. It limits the number of potential viewers. We like streaming because it democratizes the art of storytelling.”
Chris Evans has fun in his role as a sociopath, a far cry from the very suave Captain America. “He’s not a classic villain,” warns the comedian, who once played an ambiguous character in of pique. “Of course he doesn’t believe the bad guy in the story…”, she adds, smiling in the corner. His character also sports an amazing mustache that gives his character a touch of arrogance and ridiculousness.
“I didn’t expect to enjoy this adventure so much”
In front of him, Ryan Gosling reproduces the figure of the monolithic super-powerful murderer of Ridewhile injecting more humor, like in the action movies of the 80s and 90s. One of the references of the Russo brothers and the comedian on the set: “[The Gray Man] reminded me of those movies [comme L’Arme fatale, Ronin, ndlr]. They were very well done and had a lot of self-mockery. That’s what I tried to reproduce. It was very exciting.”
Even Ana de Armas, who plays a CIA agent who helps Sierra Six, got caught up in the game: “He’s not the type [de films] I like it, but it’s very funny [à faire]. Work in james link [Mourir peut attendre]although it was very short, it was a very good preparation. [pour ce film]. This time I had the opportunity to be present during the entire shoot. It was great. I didn’t expect to enjoy this adventure so much.”
The desire does not stop piling up. Mark Greaney’s literary saga has a dozen volumes. “We love long-term stories. We’ve been working on this for a long time. We love it because it creates enormous possibilities for situations and characters. We know that nothing is final, that it will always be there.” be a thread to pull and follow. We would love to do that with the gray mansays Anthony Russo. “If the public is there, we have a lot of ideas of what we could do in a sequel.
