Paul Sorvino, American ‘Goodfellas’ actor, dies at 83

He was best known for his role as Paul Cicero in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas.

American actor Paul Sorvino, famous for his role in the gangster film “Goodfellas” and father of actress Mira Sorvino, died Monday at the age of 83, his entourage announced.

“I am devastated. The love of my life and the greatest man ever born is gone. I am heartbroken,” his widow, Dee Dee Sorvino, wrote on her Facebook page.

A role also in “New York Judicial Police”

Born in April 1939 in New York, Paul Sorvino was best known for his role as Paul Cicero in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” opposite Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta, released in 1990.

The following year, he stood out in the television series “New York, Judicial Police” where he played a policeman. In 1995, he took on the role of Henry Kissinger in the Oliver Stone film “Nixon.”

“My father, the great Paul Sorvino, is dead,” tweeted his daughter Mira Sorvino, who won an Oscar in 1996 for Woody Allen’s “Cursed Aphrodite.”

Known for his supporting roles.

“My heart is torn, a life full of love, joy and wisdom at his side has come to an end,” he laments.

Paul Sorvino had multiplied supporting roles in movies or television series but he was a versatile artist, with a special gift for sculpture or opera.

“Most people think I’m a gangster or a policeman or something like that, but actually I’m a sculptor, a painter, a writer (…), but apparently I have a knack for playing these kinds of roles.” he said in a 2014 interview with the Orlando Weekly.
