It is thanks to cinema that rapper Zuukou Mayzie, a member of the 667 rap collective – which includes Freeze Corleone – discovered his passion for music.
Until then a simple reference in his discography, rich in six albums, the 7th art, now offers a favorite place in the new project of the 26-year-old musician, The Movie: The Beginning, published on Friday, July 22. Between cinematographic winks, soundtrack samples and Hollywood collaborations. BFMTV.com caught up with Zuukou Mayzie to understand the genesis of this concept album, inspired by her love of the big screen.
A film session in 25 titles
From the album cover, the tribute to cinema is present. We can see Zuukou Mayzie’s face, glasses on her nose, leaning over a cardboard box, a reference to a cult scene from the film. “These are my favorite movies and we have fun recreating their musical universe in each song. fight clubIn collaboration with the youtuber and rapper Théodort, for example, we sampled the soundtrack of the film”, specifies Zuukou Mayzie.
To push the concept further, Zuukou Mayzie envisioned this record as a director. As he explains, the objective was to give the artistic direction to his guests, and then leave them the leading role.
“As a movie producer might do, I wanted to highlight the people present in each episode. As for me, I only make a few cameos in the pieces”, indicates the artist.
A collaboration with Tom Hardy
On the casting side, Zuukou Mayzie logically invited the members of the 667 collective (Black Jack OBS, Osirus Jack or Freeze Corleone). But the artist also wanted to surprise his listeners by offering a collaboration with the famous American actor Tom Hardy, star of Mad Max: Fury Road Y Poison.
“I did a lot to get it. I got in touch with him thanks to a friend of mine’s clothing brand. I spoke to his press officer, without much hope and a few months later, when I had almost forgotten this story, I told him I received clues from her voice in my mailbox,” explains Zuukou Mayzie.
this track, Aniki, my brother part.1 -a reference to Takeshi Kitano’s film, released in 2000- lasts only 41 seconds but suggests, by its title, that the Movie will be entitled to a continuation.
“I see this album a bit like a saga in four volumes. I started with blockbusters. Afterwards, I will go to more niche films, like Korean cinema. There will be a new track with Tom Hardy and a clip to come”, he assures. the artist.
And to conclude: “And then it’s practical, it will be two in one: when we don’t know what to watch on TV we’ll just have to listen to my album”.
