It is a story of “imperfect parents and imperfect children.” Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro delivers his version of the classic of Italian literature, pinocchio.
“It’s a story you think you know, but you don’t,” says Jiminy Cricket, who speaks here voiced by Ewan McGregor. “It’s the story of the wooden boy.
The stop-motion film, based on the play by Carlo Collodi, will be available on Netflix next December. After the recent version by Matteo Garrone, with Roberto Benigni -who himself had made a pinocchio in 2002 – Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, in turn revisit the myth of the wooden puppet that has become a disobedient child. The filmmaker places his story in the 1930s, at the height of fascism.
A new version of Disney
Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard or even John Turturro, Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett lend their voices to the characters.
Disney is also preparing to reinterpret the 19th-century tale made famous by the 1940 cartoon. Old Gepetto will take on the traits of Tom Hanks in this film directed by Robert Zemeckis.
Finally, last March a new animated version of Pinocchio was also released, entitled Pinocchio: A True Story.
