Twenty years ago, a very young director and playwright had the difficulty of not finding a space to show his works. Claudio Tolcachir at that time was not a recognized name as it is in the world today. However, there was one person who knew how to recommend it and that’s where another story began.

Two decades ago, Tolcachir was working as an actor in comedy Five women with the same dress directed by Norma Aleandro. She was the actress who advised Tolcachir to take advantage of his living room, a PH in the Boedo neighborhood to set up an alternative theater space right there. “Here’s a place,” Norma told him. And everything has changed.

The director, along with a group of colleagues and friends who continue to maintain the bond to this day, transformed an environment of the house into a room. On the pavement of Calle Boedo at 600, nothing indicated that there was a theater there, at the end of a long corridor, which served as a waiting room. Whoever discovered it, from mouth to mouth, approached the door and rang the bell 4.

The beginning

The first work that debuted was Medium Ham. Y the first few years were not easy. Neighbors from the apartments ahead complained of noise, people coming in and out. They thought the drug was being sold on the back of the PH or that something strange was going on. More than once the police came and was greeted by the actors and Tolcachir himself dressed as their characters.

“It only happened there because I had the biggest living room and because I was surrounded by crazy players. But the space is the last. The building is an excuse. The stamp is the people who find themselves trying to be something that is not. will never stop being a mystery, “says Tolcachir.

Several years later and with the influx of audiences growing day by day, the lower PH expanded to another of the earlier PHs. And later, the theater was expanded around the corner along Mexico Street, where a chair factory once operated. With conditioning, it has been transformed into a room for about 200 people.

Furthermore, the patio and the bar, at the entrance to México 3554, have almost acquired a life of their own, with an audience that has not stopped growing and that constantly comes and goes from the performances and continues to talk about the works.

“It was just a matter of inventing a place in the world, a roof where you can come together to do things. Walls that protect attempts, but that could break and get back up. And above all a floor where you can fall endlessly and come out unscathed”, adds the manager .

The celebration

So next weekend from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th Augustthere will be a party at Timbre 4, for his 20th birthday, with activities in the theater and on the street, to be shared with the residents of the neighborhood who today feel the theater as their own.

But fame, at the hands of its founder, crossed the borders and reached Spain. Y in 2021 Timbre 4 opened a branch in Madrid.

Furthermore, since 2013 the TABA Festival (High Season Buenos Aires)an annual meeting with international artists, to promote theatrical exchanges and new experiences.

“Timbre 4 is a group of people who do not lose their passion and curiosity, who are capable of celebrating the growth of others and who have chosen, with all that that implies, to defend the happiness of taking risks as a team,” says Tolcachir. “Timbre is an international festival but it is also a team that produces, manages, cleans, then takes lessons and creates, all in the same space.”

The idea of a team is one of the cornerstones of the place. “I proudly believe that it is a genuine, honest place; that it can be a cave and a fertile ground for everyone. This is how it was born and this is how it grew. And this is how I hope it continues every day the form that those who find something there that moves and nourishes », he assures.

Enthusiastic about what has been achieved, from that back room of the house to this day, Tolcachir reflects: “Luckily Timbre belongs to everyone, everyone, that’s how we feel. Creators, spectators, teachers, students, producers, workers, journalists, technicians. Without proper names it is already a place where people will feel and mobilize “

And he closes, by way of celebration: “Hello to all of us who have built this space and health in the theater. That was my salvation and that of many others”.
