Darryl Hunt, bassist for The Pogues, dies at 72

Prior to The Pogues, the musician first played with the pub rock band Plummet Airlines before forming the punk band The Favourites.

Pogues bassist Darryl Hunt has died aged 72, the British folk punk band Celtic announced on Tuesday.

“We are sadder than words. Our Darryl passed away yesterday afternoon in London,” the Pogues said on their Twitter account.

The band posted a black and white photo of Hunt, quoting a snippet from the song. I love you to the end she had written: “I know you want to hear me catch my breath. I love you to the end.”

From technician to bassist

Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has paid tribute to his “great friend”. “I’m so sorry Darryl passed away, he was a really good guy, a great friend and a great bass player,” he tweeted.

Born in Christchurch, South West England, on May 4, 1950, Darryl Hunt studied fine art at the Nottingham School of Art. He first played with the pub rock band Plummet Airlines before forming the punk band The Favourites.

In September 1986 he joined the Pogues as a bass player after having worked for them as a technician. Darryl Hunt first performed with the band on the album. If I fell from God’s gracereleased in 1988, and until his last album, pogue mahonein 1996.
