Disadvantaged Latins

The change reduced the Hispanic presence at the ceremony, as Spaniards Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sánchez won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for The wiper during this stretch.

That decision angered manyand trade unions representing publishers, musicians and sound engineers proposed organizing a boycott and proposed that the candidates refuse the invitation to the ceremony.

In 2018, the Academy announced plans to remove the technical awards from the gala and deliver them during the commercial break, but withdrew after the rejection of the cinephile community.

Other awards, such as the Grammys and Latin Grammys, deliver most of the awards in a previous ceremony that is not broadcast on television, although in their case they have nearly a hundred categories (different for each musical style) compared to 23 at the Oscars. .

A gala with fewer candidates

Last year, a total of 276 films competed to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture of the Year, the top category of the Hollywood Academy Awards, which means the lowest record in the last ten years due to the pandemic.

One of the reasons that explained this significant decrease in enrollments, released by the Academy, is that the eligibility period for this edition was only 10 months, since in 2020, when the gala was postponed to the end of April, the deadline was also extended. to films released in January and February 2021.

This extension meant that 366 films aspired to win the Oscar for Best Picture, the highest number in the last 50 years. However, in the 94th edition – the last one – only films released between 1 March and 31 December 2021 could compete.
