Fantasy, magical realism, suspense and a pinch of terror, these are the elements with which Sebastian Caulier from Formosa worked. The mountainwith a Gustavo Garzon quite atypical.

And since there are no open cinemas Formosa -it is the only province that currently has no cinema-, the Formosani cannot see it in their province. It premieres in other parts of the country.

Garzón is Rafael, a man who has decided to leave the city of Formosa and settle “in the fifth”, a family property in the middle of the mountain. So far, without years of communication, now comes Nico, his son, who does not recognize from the beginning and points him a double.

Something is wrong with Rafael. He has thrown 40 years into the sea from his doctor’s office, while his son scolds him. It’s like he’s gone, lost. And that not to mention that, at night, he goes to the mountain, half naked. When the deafening noises of animals – not just monkeys – make sleep difficult, Rafael stands up, raises his arms, and appears to be making something like a request. An offer. A question?

What are you doing? What is happening?

It is that the protagonists are not only the father and the son. The third in question is the mount.

The relationship between the first two seems to be mortally wounded. “Useless” is the least the parent says to the child. And he doesn’t just point out that when he shoots meters from a prey, he lets it escape, or doesn’t know how to hook a worm. Nico is a university student like him, he is a philosopher and had a gay partner, who left him at any moment.

There are resentments, but also a thread of understanding, but that can be interrupted at any time.

Caulier, a graduate of POWERthe INCAA Film School, already in its previous films the innocence of the spider (2012) and the hague (2017) has shown that he has a style and a universe that distinguishes him. He manages the silences well, the suspense, and creates a climate between deliberately hostile and decidedly strange.

Garzón has a fundamental role, Rafael is the reason why Nico reaches the mountain, but above all Juan Barberini, who plays his son, is almost always on the screen, carrying the weight of the plot of this film in which mythology, fantasy and reality converge.
