Apple TV + revealed the first photos of Gutsy, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s documentary series.
Apple TV + has unveiled the first images and the trailer for Courageousthe long-awaited eight-part documentary series that follows Hillary Rodham Clinton and her daughter Chelsea Clinton as they meet brave and inspiring women.
The docuseries, which opens on Friday 9 Septemberis based on The Book of Brave Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resiliencethe Clintons’ book published in 2019 that remained on the New York Times bestseller list for ten weeks.
In terms of docurity, they are the former US Secretary of State and his only daughter hostesses who embark on a journey to talk and reflect with women artists, activists, leaders and everyday heroines who have become pioneers and who share the virtue of being brave.
From Kim Kardashian to Jane Goodall
The Clintons are joined by some of their personal heroinesextraordinary and resilient women who have made an impact in their community and the world, including entrepreneur and media actress Kim Kardashian, rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Dr. Jane Goodall and journalist, writer and activist Gloria Steinem.
And the list goes on: actresses and producers Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer, Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson; drag queen Symone (known as Reggie Gavin), American footballer Abby Wambach, Natalie Wynn, better known as the political columnist and youtuber “ContraPoints”, and many others.
“We are walking the path to enlighten women who inspire us to be bolder and more courageous,” says Hillary at the beginning of the trailer, getting into the car with his 42-year-old journalist and writer daughter who worked as a correspondent for the NBC network.
Gutsy follows Hillary and Chelsea like they’ve never been shown before, exposing their special mother-daughter bond. But, in addition, it seeks to delve into the unique and multigenerational way in which they address the important and current issues that are highlighted in each episode.
Clinton production and female direction
Each of the eight episodes of Gutsy is directed by women, almost all with television and / or documentary experience. They are Chai, MJ Delaney (Ted Lasso), Amber Fares (Transparent), Sally Freeman (Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations), Yu Gu, Joie Jacoby (Lil Joints by Spike Lee), Arlene Nelson (This is Paris) and Cynthia Wade ( scream).
Courageous was produced for Apple by HiddenLight Productions, the company founded by Clintons and Sam Branson, in association with Left / Right LLC. In fact, it’s the story that inspired the creation of the production house when it was first announced in December 2020.
Ed is the executive producer of Hillary and Chelsea, along with Johnny Webb, Siobhan Sinnerton, Roma Khanna, Ken Druckerman, Banks Tarver and Anna Chai, who also works as showrunner.
The Clintons, at the Toronto Film Festival
On September 10, one day after the world premiere of the docuseries on Apple TV +, The Clintons will attend the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to submit Courageous and interview about those intimate conversations with “bold women”.
At the time of the announcement, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey noted that the two Clintons have an “inspirational” experience on gender social and political issues.
“We are honored to have this special conversation as part of the TIFF Industry Conference and to highlight their docuseries,” added Bailey.
TIFF opens this year’s edition on 8 September with the world premiere of the drama The swimmers, based on the true story of Sara and Yusra Mardinitwo sisters who in 2015 escaped the civil conflict in Syria and crossed from Turkey to Greece on a sunken boat.
