“Asshole”, “Macron Releases” … Saturday night, on stage at Le Touquet Music Beach, music festival, Marc Rebillet, French-American musician copiously insulted President. Emmanuel Macron, who has a second home in Le Touquet, attended part of the festival on his return from Algeria.
Marc Rebillet denounced the attitude of the festival on social networks on Sunday. “They cut the sound off, or at least they tried to, then they put it back on,” he explains in English on social media. “And now they want me back, for a performance I finished, because they didn’t like what I said,” he says indignantly.
King of improvisation, Marc Rebillet is an electronic musician who began his career on Youtube. More than 2 million subscribers follow him on the platform. The Franco-American artist born in Texas in 1986, love of a French and an American, and raised in New Jersey, started in 2016. He would then record improvisations in his room, equipped with a Loop Station and a MIDI keyboard, and sometimes dressed in a robe.
improvisation and humor
“It’s something I was doing while working in a call center, to distract myself, really hoping for something in the distant future,” he explained in an interview with wbur in 2020. “Eventually, I lost that job and started playing local gigs.” in Dallas, where I’m from. From there things went slowly and a few months later I was in New York.”
“I have no idea what happened, but the videos went from 1,000 views to 20,000, then 50,000, 100,000 views! Concert offers were flooding my inboxes and an agent contacted me,” he also told Tsugi in 2019.
During the lockdown, his “quarantine streams” attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers. He gave his phone number there for fans to call him and be inspired by his conversations to create songs.
“My business doubled during the pandemic,” he told Le Parisien on August 18.
From the bedroom to the stage
Moved from his room to the stage, Marc Rebillet did not fall out of his robe for all that. Today, the musician multiplies stage performances, tinged with humor and absurdity, which sometimes seem like a happening, like on Saturday night at Le Touquet.
On stage, as in streaming on YouTube, his trademark continues to be improvisation and interactivity with the public. From a keyboard – he started playing the piano at age 5 and went through the Manhattan School of Music – and a mixer, he creates different interpretations every time.
The musician has released three albums, Marc Rebilletin 2018, Europe in 2019 and daddy loop iii in 2020, and two EPs, daddy loop in 2018 and daddy loop ii in 2019.
It happens today on all stages of the world. The Eurockéennes in Belfort, the Zeltfestival in Mannheim, Garorock, Jazz in Vienna, the Palladium in Cologne, Manchester, Glasgow… Marc Rebillet was at all the festivals this summer. He will continue his tour at the beginning of the school year in the United States, from Las Vegas to Boston, via Atlanta and Brooklyn. On September 5 he will be on stage at the Olympia and on September 11 at the Aerof de Lille.
