American vaccine manufacturer Moderna will announce on Friday that it is in Montreal that it wants to build its production plant in Canada, which the pharmaceutical company has already promised.
Mayor Valérie Plante confirmed on Thursday morning that it was good to Montreal that the factory will be built.
I am extremely proud of the work of the City of Montreal, which has supported the company and supported the governmentsMayor Plante said Thursday morning at a press briefing on another topic.
Ang economic recovery of the city and its dynamism is no stranger to the vaccine manufacturer’s decision in America, according to the mayor.
The deal came about nine months after Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel signed an agreement with the federal government to build a factory in Canada.
Canada’s biomanufacturing industry has dramatically shrunk in recent years. So when COVID-19 vaccines were needed, no factory in Canada immediately made them.
Canada has become completely dependent on vaccines imported from abroad, and Innovation Minister Francois-Phillipe Champagne said Canada would never be in that situation again.
Ottawa last year announced a $ 2.2 billion envelope over seven years to try to reverse this trend.
The federal government has already allocated $ 126 million to build a vaccine manufacturing plant in Montreal managed by the National Research Council Canada. Ottawa also provided $ 173 million to help Medicago, of Quebec, develop a vaccine against COVID-19 and increase its production capacity.
