The Government of Quebec has announced the establishment of specialized clinics for chronic diseases COVID and Lyme.
The Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé, made the announcement on Thursday, specifying that approximately fifteen of these specialized clinics will be deployed in Quebec territory.
Long -term COVID, like Lyme disease in its ongoing form, are diseases that are not yet fully understood, both in Quebec and elsewhere in the world. We want to make sure that people suffering the consequences of these diseases will receive the services they need, just like other patients.said Minister Dubé.
Clinics focus on these two diseases because of their consequences and the similar needs of those affected.
In December 2021, before the fifth wave and the arrival of new variants, it is estimated that approximately 23,000 people will require the services to be offered under this pilot project.
Part of its research will make it possible to better understand these two diseases, as professionals are faced with a lack of scientific consensus.
The project will be rolled out over the next few months over three years.
CHUM will link the network of clinics. It will also be a referral center such as the MUHC, the CIUSSS Estrie-CHUS, the CHU de Québec – Université Laval and the CIUSSS du Center-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal (Jewish General Hospital).
Planned project funding of $ 20.5 million was included in the final budget.
Although COVID-19 is now known, keep in mind that Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of a tick-carrying bacterium. This infectious disease can have various cutaneous, joint, muscular or neurological manifestations.
