Monkeypox, also called monkeypox in English, continues to thrive in Quebec, including Montreal, the metropolis that is fast becoming the “epicenter” of disease in North America, according to public health authorities.
Quebec now has 132 cases of monkeypox, including 126 in Montreal, they said at a press briefing. More than 3,000 people at risk have been vaccinated so far.
Dr. Luc Boileau, national director of public health, and Drs. Mylène Drouin, regional director of public health in Montreal, invited the media to provide an update on the disease on Tuesday afternoon. The situation is well controlledassurance of Dr. Boileau.
The release comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) plans to declare a international public health emergencies. The virus has been reported so far in 39 countries, including 32 where the disease is not endemic. That said, no deaths have been recorded yet.
Canada, Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta have also recorded cases of monkeypox, but less than in Quebec.
