A virus that circulates less, but is still virulent. This is revealed by the latest epidemiological bulletin from Public Health France, on Covid-19, published this Thursday. In week 28, that is, between July 11 and 17, “the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 decreases” but “virological indicators are (maintained) at a very high level,” writes the health agency.
In fact, most indicators are down. The incidence rate stands at 1,127, compared to 1,346 the previous week, “that is, more than 90,000 new cases on average per day.” A decrease of 16% after “six consecutive weeks of increase”, reports Public Health France.
Likewise, 663,736 new cases of Covid were identified, that is, almost 250,000 less than in week 27 (913,710). The reproduction rate of the virus, meanwhile, fell from 1.20 to 0.83 throughout the territory.
A 42% increase in deaths
In the hospital, the indicators “remain high,” according to the agency, “especially among those over 70 years of age.” Between July 11 and 18, 7,907 new hospitalizations were registered, against 9,007 the previous week, a decrease of 12%. In critical care, with 741 new admissions (856 in week 27), this represents a decrease of 13%.
As for the number of deaths, it continues to rise: 590 deaths were recorded in hospital, against 416 in week 27, an increase of 42%.
Despite the slowdown in contamination, Public Health France warns during this summer vacation period, “propitious for an increase in the transmission of the virus” and recalls the importance of “barrier gestures”, which remain essential to protect to the most vulnerable populations. “.
