The seventh wave of the Covid-19 epidemic continues to recede. During its weekly update, published on Thursday evening, Public Health France confirms the drop in the circulation of the virus in metropolitan France.
The agency has recorded an average of 51,594 new cases daily over the last week. The incidence rate is thus reduced by 34%. This seems to confirm the trend of the previous week, in which the number of registered cases decreased for the first time in six weeks.
Public Health France, however, calls for vigilance and observes “a still active circulation of the virus”. The incidence rate is highest between the ages of 20 and 29, where it is 1,000/100,000.
An unequal situation depending on the region
This decline also seems to end in the hospital. Public Health France has 7,467 hospitalizations for the week of July 18-24, a decrease of 16% compared to the previous week.
“A slight decrease in intensive care was also observed at the national level, but with marked territorial disparities, some regions still present rising incomes”, also writes Public Health France.
Despite these positive signs, the number of deaths has increased very slightly, with 641 people dying from the disease. Finally, the situation is more nuanced in the Overseas Territories. The incidence rate remains high in Guadeloupe, the incidence and positivity rates are increasing again in Réunion, the incidence rate is stabilizing “at a moderate level” in Mayotte.
Vaccination always recommended
The Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the majority in this seventh wave of Covid-19, and represents 90% of the interpretable strains of the virus. No cases of the new subvariant BA.2.75 have been detected in France since the last weekly update.
To fight the epidemic, Public Health France again insists on vaccination, “especially in overseas territories and among the oldest”. As of July 25, only 41.8% of people age 80 and older had received the second booster dose, for which they are eligible.
