In the columns of Le Parisien, Brigitte Autran, president of the Health Risk Monitoring and Anticipation Committee, which replaced the Scientific Council, states that “the Covid epidemic is not far behind”.

The beginning of the school year promises to be difficult. If the Covid-19 figures have been very low in recent days, the virus should circulate more strongly in the population, warns our colleagues from the Parisian Professor of Immunology Brigitte Autran. This Wednesday she became, for a date at the official diaryChairman of the brand-new Health Risk Monitoring and Forecasting Committee, which replaces the Scientific Council.

“There will almost certainly be a wave in the fall”

“The most likely scenario is that of an epidemic peak at the beginning of the school year. Is it due to a new variant or due to the return of the cold? We are not guessing, but it is almost certain that there will be a wave.” in the fall,” he told the regional newspaper.

“Today we have to go live with it,” he says, using an expression used by Emmanuel Macron and various ministers since the start of the crisis, in the spring of 2020.

“The Covid epidemic is not far behind”

“That does not mean accepting the dead or the severity of the disease. On the contrary,” warns Brigitte Autran, who believes that there are still “levers to be activated” to fight the virus. Thus, the head of the Health Risk Monitoring and Anticipation Commission considers that “unfortunately there are still too many people who do not get vaccinated or are not revaccinated”.

According to the latest aggregate data from Covid-Tracker, at least 79.6% of French people have received all the required doses. But at the current rate, “we would have vaccinated the entire eligible population (over 12 years of age) with at least one dose on October 11, 2039.”

“The Covid epidemic has not been left behind”, summarizes Brigitte Autran. “Effective treatments to prevent severe forms like Paxlovid are very little known, very little offered to frail patients,” she laments.

Her Committee “will advise the government to expand access to medicines and vaccines”, announces Brigitte Autran in The Parisian.
