The Service de police de la Ville de Lévis (SPVL) has removed the veil on a network selling fake driver’s licenses for high school students. Scammers used the Snapchat app to communicate with teens.
Two people were arrested as part of this investigation: a 21 -year -old man and a minor woman in Lavaltrie near Montreal.
Alcohol, cigarettes, etc.
According to the SPVL, the fraud was discovered thanks to parents intercepting an envelope for their child. It contained a fake driver’s license in the name of their children, but was doctored.
The wrong permit was used to obtain alcohol, cigarettes and other products for people 18 and older, police department spokesman François Gagnon confirmed.
The latter believes that the situation has almost become a plague in schools in Lévis and surrounding areas.
Snapchat
The SPVL believes the scammers contacted students using the social network Snapchat, which is very popular with young people, to offer fake permits.
Several hundred fake driver’s licenses were circulating and they came from the same senderthe police statement.
The youths had to send an amount of money, which was not disclosed by the police, as well as their contact details to get their fake license.
$ 50,000 to the suspects
The police judge said this fraud would bring more than $ 50,000 to the suspects.
The search of two residences near Montreal and two vehicles led to the seizure of computer equipment, fake driver’s licenses, cell phones and money.
The two suspects are facing charges of trafficking in false documents and production of false documents.
Police stressed that the investigation was aimed at dismantling the network, and not to find children using doctor’s permits.
