Benfica announced this Wednesday that it has reached “an agreement in principle” to hire German Roger Schmidt, current PSV Eindhoven coach, as coach for next season. The Lisbon club clarified that said agreement “has not yet been formalized”, although everything indicates that Schmidt will be the one who will lead Benfica from July, replacing Nelson Veríssimo.

In a statement released this Wednesday to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), since the club is a public limited company, Benfica clarified that “negotiations are taking place”.
Roger Schmidt, 55, PSV manager from 2020-2021, has managed teams such as Beijing Guoan, Bayer Leverkusen and Salzburg. The German will relieve Nelson Veríssimo, who has been coaching the Da Luz team since the end of 2021 after the departure of Jorge Jesús.
Currently, Benfica is third in the Portuguese League standings, 14 points behind the leader, Porto, and 5 behind Sporting, its local rival.
