The provincial government will provide an additional $ 3.9 million in funding to support affected businesses, nonprofits and commercial owners.

The downtown of this small town in the southwest of the province was disfigured on August 24, 2021 by an explosion. On the same day, gas leaks were detected. Nearly 100 homes and dozens of businesses were evacuated.

A statement released by the City of Chatham-Kent on Monday says that in total, the county has provided nearly $ 6 million in community relief funds since the explosion occurred.

Additional support comes from the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.

In April, several residents and six business owners were allowed to return to their properties.

We would like to thank the Wheatley companies for their patience, understanding and perseverance in this difficult process. We would also like to thank the Prime Minister [Doug] Ford and his team for their diligent efforts to bring these funds to our community Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said in the press release.

The City said additional funding will be provided in three phases to help the affected businesses until August 2022. The first amount will be provided immediately to approved applicants, the municipality said.
