The remains discovered Monday in a garbage container in eastern Toronto were the remains of a baby girl who had been dead for several months, police said Thursday after an autopsy.
At a press briefing, Detective Renee Foley described the girl as 4 to 7 years old Black of African or mixed African descent and about 105cm tall.
She is thin. She has all her teeth and has curly black hair styled in four short ponytails, two of which are braided and secured by black and blue rubber bands.
The victim was wrapped in a crochet blanket inside a plastic bag wrapped in colorful blankets. Police released photos of the objects in hopes someone would identify them and contact investigators.
The cause of death has not been determined so far.
The results of an autopsy conducted by Ontario Forensic Pathology Services on Wednesday also show that the victim has been dead since the fall of 2021. But he may have been since before the summersaid Inspector Hank Idsinga, who heads the Toronto Police Homicide and Missing Persons Unit.
Investigators believe the remains were abandoned between Thursday, April 28, 2022, at exactly 12 pm and Monday, May 2, 2022, at 4:45 pm in the residential yard just north of the Castle Frank tube station.
Police said they were reviewing a killer CCTV footage to try to figure out who left the remains as they searched for data of missing people in the country.
