Reduced charge for Almatois Philippe Deslauriers

The legal case of Almatois Philippe Deslauriers is taking a new chance. He who was charged with first degree murder of Marc Sasseville is now charged with non-premeditated murder.

The case was dropped Thursday morning in court.

We asked the Crown to consider the possibility of reducing the seriousness of the crime filed against him, from the first degree to the second degree, and in return, we would not conduct the preliminary investigation, the lawyer explained for the individual Me Jean-Marc Fradette. This saves judicial resources at the same time, of course, but it is also a significant benefit for the defendants.

The 31-year-old will be named for trial in September. According to his lawyer, he now faces ten years in prison, instead of 25 years.

The events allegedly against Philippe Deslauriers began last October, when Marc Sasseville, 54, was found dead in a residence on rue Gagné in Alma.

Me Fradette intends to submit a request for the release of her client within a few weeks. He believes it will be easier to get this request because of the new charge.
