Gunfire at Anse-des-Belliveau forced the evacuation of a sector

The small community of Anse-des-Belliveau in the Baie-Sainte-Marie region was shaken on Saturday. A gunman fires a gun at a residence.

Officers from the Meteghan Detachment attended around 10:30 a.m. Saturday at a home on Belle Vue Street after being received a complaint about an unknown disturbance.

The first police officer to arrive at the scene saw an armed man come out of the house and heard gunshots.

The area was evacuated and neighborhood residents had to leave their homes.

Police were called from a nearby detachment. Also on the scene were the Nova Scotia Emergency Response Team, police dogs and a hostage negotiator.

At 11:38 a.m., the RCMP arrested a 23-year-old man. He was charged with reckless use of a firearm, firing a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, intimidation, mischief and resisting arrest.

The man appears Monday morning in Digby Provincial Court.
