Teen in distress fell from the overpass, SIRT to assess RCMP response

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has called for help from the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) after one of its officers intervened with a teenager who was in distress.

On Monday night around 10:15 p.m., police were called to the scene of an incident in Oromocto.

A miner in distress was on a Highway 2 overpass on Waasis Road.

When police arrived, he climbed the balustrade of the viaduct. A policeman tried to stop him, in vain. The young man fell on the highway.

The officer immediately attended the scene and gave first aid until ambulances arrived.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police have not yet said what the teenager’s condition is so far.

The RCMP is committed to accountability and transparency in the communities it servessaid Corporal Hans Ouellette in a statement.

Given the severity of this incident, we have asked the Serious Incident Response Team to review our actions to ensure we have done all we can in our response.He added.

Support services are offered to members of the police force involved.
