The Montreal Counter-Information website, which has been active for ten years, is in the crosshair of the police after a series of claims of acts of vandalism to protest against capitalism.
One of the latest victims of these leftist activists is former cabinet minister and Conservative senator Michael Fortier. The latter, who has been one of the vice-presidents at the head of RBC bank since October 2010, saw his two personal vehicles set on fire in front of his private residence on the night of May 4 to 5.
As the glaciers melt, the drought, fire and famine melt, Mr. might think. Fortier that his money and contacts will save him, his children and grandchildren. But the furious will know the names of the great leaders. He must understand that no one is safe in this messcan we read in a written claim published in Montreal Counter-Information.
It appears that Mr. Fortier, who declined to comment on the incident, was targeted because RBC is one of the main creditors of the TC Energy gas pipeline, which is 760 km long. Anarchist activists on the far left oppose the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which crosses Wetʼsuwetʼen territory on its route.
[…] There is no doubt that Mr. is comfortable. Fortier on his employer’s decision to continue funding the Coastal GasLink pipeline (or any other dirty RBC -funded project).we write the same text.
Investigators from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) questioned Michael Fortier and recovered images from surveillance cameras in the area of his private residence.
In police crosshairs for years
The SPVM and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) are interested in the activities of the Montréal Contre-Information site, which for many years has claimed responsibility for several arson attacks and vandalism activities targeting on the railways.
So far, our information leads us to believe that these militants, who present themselves as anarchists, are not acting in a certain form of grouping. If they are in the smallest order under one entity, we will have information about themcomment by a police source from SQ.
It will be recalled that it opened an investigation in July 2020 when Vince Parente’s personal vehicle was set on fire at his home in Sainte-Thérèse. The latter was an adviser to the Deputy Minister of Public Security for the Montreal region. The case is still unresolved to date.
In the same summer, in 2020, a dozen SPVM patrol cars, parked behind the police station in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood, were destroyed by fires that also burned. The act was claimed by anarchists at Montreal Counter-Information.
To be careful, they are most likely people with common interests who exchange privately in secure forums or applications on smart devices. Without having to recognize each other, they decided to act before disappearingadded an investigator interested in the small team that manages the website.
A website hosted in Iceland
According to an analysis by Jean-Philippe Décarie-Mathieu, head of cybersecurity at the Commissionaires du Québec, the Montréal Contre-Information site is currently hosted on a 1984.hosting server located in Iceland.
Following the website’s activities, we know that the managers behind this bulletin board of activists are well aware of what they are doing. Clearly they have knowledge of security checks that have long escaped the police. They are careful. They do not connect to an IP address from where they are. They also do cleaning up their online activitiesexplanation by cybersecurity specialist. For several years, the site has been on the Rise Up platform, a Germany-based hosting site that offers services to activist groups.
These managers will have the ability to move their server site in just a few hours. A few years ago, they were hosted in France when SPVM tried to get information from Montreal, without success.
In 2022, it is possible to commit the perfect crime with knowledge and discipline. You need to be careful and do not connect from an IP address where you are. And you also need to clean up your online activitiesrepeated by Mr. Décarie-Mathieu.
Officially, none of the two main police forces in Quebec have commented on the investigation file, despite a repetition of events associated with the website.
Contacted via email, the managers of the Montréal Contre-Information website did not respond to questions from Radio-Canada at the time of publication of this article.
